- This unique Kansai University reading promotion project, which began with the desire to "put a brake on young people's declining interest in reading," is now in its 9th year.
- Reading is for paper, not electronics – responding to the real opinions seen in student surveys.
"100 Books for Freshmen" started with the desire to "put a brake on young people's declining interest in reading." This is a unique reading promotion project of our university that enters its 9th year this year. The 100 selected books consist of 20 books recommended by our university's President, Tomoyuki Takahashi, plus 40 books each recommended by Maruzen-Yushodo and Kinokuniya. Driven by the hope that students will "visit bookstores and encounter even more books during their university days," the project introduces large stores in Osaka City belonging to the two cooperating bookstores, complete with photographs. Furthermore, the arrangements for the books in this project (including e-books) are supported by the university's Education Support Association (the parents' association), positioning them as a gift from parents to their children.
■ "Paper over Electronics" – Responding to the real opinions seen in surveys
As a result of a survey conducted by our university library among students, a tendency to prefer printed books over e-books was observed. Therefore, the proportion of printed books has been significantly increased compared to previous years. On the other hand, in order to create an environment where students can become more familiar with e-books, we have used an entire page to carefully explain, with diagrams, how to access and view e-books via the special page on the library website.
