Kanko Gakuseifuku Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Okayama City, Kita Ward, Ekimotocho, President: Shigeru Ozaki, hereinafter: Kanko Gakuseifuku) has released survey data on "The Reality of Fatigue and Lethargy in Junior and Senior High School Students" in its "Kanko Homeroom" Vol. 245, a research report published on the last Tuesday of every month.
Modern junior and senior high school students lead busy lives with school, club activities, homework, and cram school. It seems that many students feel "tiredness that doesn't go away" or "a general sense of lethargy." How much physical fatigue and lethargy do junior and senior high school students experience in their school and daily lives?
This survey polled 1,200 junior and senior high school students nationwide to gauge the degree of physical fatigue and lethargy they experience, its impact on their studies, and the situations in which they feel tired or lethargic.
◆Survey Results Summary◆
●Approximately 80% of junior and senior high school students experience daily fatigue and lethargy.
●Over 70% of students experiencing fatigue and lethargy responded that they "sometimes cannot concentrate on their studies."
●Junior and senior high school students feel most tired or lethargic during "class (lectures)," with "commuting to and from school" and "exams (tests)" also ranking high.
◆Conclusion and Perspective◆
In recent years, the living environment surrounding junior and senior high school students has changed significantly due to factors such as sleep deprivation from increased use of digital devices, stress from exams and interpersonal relationships, and lack of exercise. In the field of "School Health," which researches children's health behaviors and living environments, the accumulation of chronic fatigue unique to modern times and disruptions in the autonomic nervous system are attracting attention as factors that lead to decreased motivation for learning and cognitive function.
This survey, which polled 1,200 junior and senior high school students nationwide about the degree of physical fatigue and lethargy they experience in their daily school and life, found that when combining responses of "often" (33.8%) and "sometimes" (46.4%), approximately 80% of students reported experiencing fatigue and lethargy. This highlights the reality that junior and senior high school students are facing daily fatigue.
Furthermore, among students who reported experiencing fatigue and lethargy, combining responses of "often" (30.5%) and "sometimes" (43.9%) revealed that over 70% find it difficult to concentrate on their studies due to fatigue and lethargy.
The most common situation where junior and senior high school students experience fatigue and lethargy was "during class (lectures)" (69.4% overall, 69.1% for junior high, 69.8% for senior high). Remaining in the same posture for long periods during class appears to be one reason students feel fatigued. Following this were "commuting to and from school" (45.9% overall, 46.1% for junior high, 45.8% for senior high), "exams (tests)" (44.6% overall, 51.8% for junior high, 37.6% for senior high), "club activities" (23.1% overall, 27.8% for junior high, 18.5% for senior high), and "cram school" (15.7% overall, 24.4% for junior high, 7.2% for senior high). Junior high school students, compared to senior high school students, appear to experience more physical fatigue during exams, club activities, and cram school.
It was found that approximately 80% of both junior and senior high school students experience daily fatigue, and many of them feel tired or lethargic during basic school activities such as classes and commuting. Given that the accumulation of this daily fatigue has a considerable impact on the learning environment, creating an environment that encourages students to engage in learning is required.
