About the film 'Kabuki Actor Kataoka Nizaemon XIII':
This film is a documentary that follows the life of the esteemed actor Kataoka Nizaemon XIII, father of the current Kataoka Nizaemon XV, who supported the Kabuki world from the late Showa to early Heisei eras, from ages 84 to 90. It is an extraordinary masterpiece, produced by documentary filmmaker Sumiko Haneda and Jiyu Kobo, consisting of 6 volumes and totaling 10 hours and 46 minutes.
Due to its extensive length, screening opportunities in cinemas have been limited, and it has not been released on home video or online streaming, leading it to be known as a "legendary work." The most recent complete screening was in Paris in 2018 as an official program of "Japonismes 2018." This time, commemorating the 33rd anniversary of Nizaemon XIII's passing and the 100th anniversary of Sumiko Haneda's birth, the complete 6-volume series will be screened in domestic cinemas for the first time in 17 years.
Beyond his stage performances in works like 'Kotobuki Soga no Taimen,' 'Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami,' 'Koi Bikyaku Yamato Orai,' and his final stage 'Hachin Shugo no Shiro,' the film also features a rich collection of artistic discussions and rehearsal scenes. It is a must-see masterpiece for Kabuki fans, showcasing the "dignity" of an actor earnestly pursuing his art throughout his life.
Furthermore, author Shuichi Yoshida watched this film while writing the original novel for the blockbuster film 'Kokuhou.' We confidently recommend this work as an invitation "deeper into the world of Kabuki" for those who have become interested in Kabuki through works like 'Kokuhou' and 'Kobikicho no Adauchi.'
