TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY, the largest-scale urban development project in Japan led by East Japan Railway Company (JR East; Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yoichi Kise) on the former site of the Shinagawa rail yard, officially celebrated its grand opening today, Saturday, March 28, 2026. *As of 18:00 on Saturday, March 28. Following the initial opening of 'THE LINKPILLAR 1' on March 27 of last year, today's grand opening adds three new buildings: 'THE LINKPILLAR 2,' 'MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives,' and 'TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY RESIDENCE.' Simultaneously, 'OIMACHI TRACKS' in the adjacent Oimachi area also opened, marking the start of a new journey for the Greater Shinagawa area. Prior to the grand opening, the 'TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY / OIMACHI TRACKS Simultaneous Opening Ceremony' was held at 9:30 AM inside the cultural creation hub, 'MoN Takanawa.' The ceremony was broadcast live between the two venues. Attendees at the Takanawa Gateway City venue included Norikazu Sasaki (State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), Yuriko Koike (Governor of Tokyo), Ai Seike (Mayor of Minato City), Tamayo Marukawa (Member of the House of Representatives), Kengo Kuma (Principal, Kengo Kuma & Associates), Kabuki actors Kikugoro Onoe and Kikunosuke Onoe, actors Shinichi Tsutsumi and Ami Toma, and Yuji Fukasawa (Chairman of the Board, JR East). The ceremony featured the latest android, 'Yamatoroid,' as one of the emcees, symbolizing the future of the city and embodying the vision of coexistence between humans and robots. The event opened with a performance by the NHK Symphony Orchestra at Takanawa Gateway City. This was followed by a vibrant performance by the Shiki Theatre Company at the OIMACHI TRACKS stage, creating a shared sense of excitement between the two locations. After the opening remarks, a 'Tape Transfer' performance highlighted the collaboration between the two districts: a ribbon was transported from the Oimachi Station platform via the Keihin-Tohoku Line, delivered to the stage by the Takanawa Gateway Station Master, and received by the humanoid robot 'Galbot G1,' showcasing a fusion of railway heritage and cutting-edge technology. At the OIMACHI TRACKS venue, JR East President Yoichi Kise, representing the organizers, stated, 'Our entire staff is filled with great joy to reach this day. We are proud to advance this project...'
