The Japanese Red Cross Society (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Atsushi Seike; hereinafter "JRC") is holding an exhibition to look back on "100 Years of Red Cross Training," which has pursued "forms of care" that meet the needs of the times and has continued to be close to people's lives, marking the 100th anniversary since the beginning of "Red Cross Training" that protects lives and health.
The JRC began "Hygiene Training Courses" with "First Aid" and "Home Nursing Methods" as its two pillars on December 23, 1925, to save more lives by disseminating the know-how accumulated in wartime and disaster relief to the general public.
Last year, we held the exhibition "99 Years of First Aid," but this exhibition focuses on "Home Nursing Methods" and traces the evolution of training as it shifted from individuals to a more community-oriented approach.
Florence Nightingale, who returned from relief efforts in the Crimean War, once stated in *Notes on Nursing* that "every woman, at some time in her life, will be a nurse," meaning that nursing is an experience everyone naturally undergoes. Today, the subject of that statement has changed, aiming for everyone to support each other, regardless of gender or age.
One hundred years ago, the average life expectancy of Japanese people was less than 50 years. Even today, with extended average life expectancy, "being healthy" remains the foundation of human happiness.
From pre-war hygiene training, post-war home nursing training, to current health and lifestyle support training.
Please see the 100 years of the Red Cross, which will continue to provide specific knowledge and skills useful for health and safety.
This exhibition is registered and implemented as part of the Cabinet Secretariat's "Showa 100th Anniversary" related initiatives, looking back on the Showa era, which was a period of unprecedented upheaval, transformation, hardship, and reconstruction.
