About the "651 Series" and "E657 Series"
651 Series The 651 series debuted in March 1989 with the catchphrase "The amazing guy with a tuxedo body." It was mainly used for the Joban Line limited express "Super Hitachi" and retired from regular service on the Joban Line in March 2013. After that, it was also used for the Takasaki Line limited express "Akagi" and "Swallow Akagi" from March 2014, operating for about 35 years. It finally retired from regular service on all lines with the timetable revision in March 2023.
E657 Series The E657 series is the latest limited express train, inheriting the lineage of JR East's main limited express trains, the 651 series, E653 series, and E259 series. It was developed with themes such as comfortable in-car facilities for peace of mind, pursuit of further comfort, and consideration for business use. The exterior and interior designs incorporate colors and patterns related to the railway line, such as the plum blossoms of Kairakuen, creating a space that combines Japanese taste with modernity. Two-tier full-color LED in-car information displays are installed in the passenger compartments.
