PharmaEssentia Corporation (Headquarters: Taipei, Taiwan; Founder & CEO: Ko-Chung Lin, hereinafter 'PharmaEssentia'), a global biopharma company originating from Asia, announced the establishment of the 'PharmaEssentia Innovation Award' on March 27 as a new initiative to discover and support biotechnology and healthcare startup teams with the potential for commercialization in the global market. The inaugural award will be held in collaboration with TECH-Tokyo (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Executive Director: Jorge Cortell), a leading innovation hub in Japan, and both companies will simultaneously recruit biomedical startup teams in Taiwan and Japan. This will promote collaboration between Taiwan and Japan in the biotechnology and healthcare sectors and accelerate the expansion of innovative biomedical technologies and products into the global market.
Applications for this award open today. The Grand Prize winner will receive $100,000 USD, with a total prize pool of $200,000 USD. The company aims for this award to go beyond merely providing research funds; by providing industry resources and sharing knowledge, it intends to facilitate the exchange of cutting-edge technologies and accelerate innovation by startup teams towards clinical development and global commercialization.
As the global pharmaceutical industry evolves rapidly, biotechnology innovation is moving beyond the confines of a single company's in-house R&D, with new opportunities constantly emerging from interdisciplinary and cross-border collaborative networks. Under the philosophy of 'building connections, enabling cooperation, and driving innovation', the 'PharmaEssentia Innovation Award' aims to build a cross-border platform that connects academic research capabilities, startup momentum, and international industrial resources, thereby fostering exchange, enhancing value, and laying the foundation for future strategic collaborations.
This award focuses on strategic fields closely tied to PharmaEssentia's core R&D direction and global business expansion, welcoming applications from startup teams with the potential to bring about innovative therapies. Target categories include innovative drug research and development in hematology, oncology, rare diseases, and autoimmune diseases; drug discovery and development platforms utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML); and ex vivo or in vivo cell therapy technology platforms. The judging panel will include prominent experts from Harvard University in the U.S., as well as leaders from industry and research institutions in Taiwan and Japan. The judges possess expertise in hematology, oncology, and immunology, combining outstanding academic achievements with extensive industry experience, ensuring evaluations properly balance scientific innovation, clinical application value, and potential for deployment in the global market.
Through the first-ever 'PharmaEssentia Innovation Award', PharmaEssentia hopes to partner with TECH-Tokyo to promote Taiwan-Japan collaboration in innovative R&D, academic exchange, and industrial application, while creating opportunities for long-term, substantial strategic partnerships. In future editions, PharmaEssentia plans to expand the scale of the program by inviting startup teams from even more countries, continuing to provide innovative treatment options for patients worldwide, and enhancing the international recognition and influence of Taiwan's biotechnology industry.
