British footwear brand Dr. Martens is celebrating the 65th anniversary of one of its foundational icons, the '1461 shoe,' with the release of a Japan-exclusive '1461 Black Mono' model, handcrafted at the brand's original factory in Northamptonshire, England.
The 1461 shoe was the second iconic model to come off the production line, following the brand's first boot, the '1460.' As a unisex 3-eye shoe, it has earned high acclaim for its durability, comfort, and versatile style. The model name is derived from its birth date, as it was first manufactured on April 1, 1961.
Over the past 65 years, the 1461 shoe has welcomed a diverse range of people from around the world into the Dr. Martens community. With its timeless, ageless silhouette and signature Dr. Martens details—such as the air-cushioned sole and yellow welt stitching—it has left its 'bouncing' soul on the feet of workers, musicians, artists, activists, and various other creators who continue to shape culture globally.
This anniversary model is produced at the Dr. Martens 'Made in England' factory. It features Classic Calf leather from C.F. Stead, a Leeds-based tannery established in 1904, and is a collectible limited edition that incorporates the brand's unique design codes throughout.
The unique texture of the full-grain leather is characterized by a deep finish created by a blend of natural oils and waxes. As it is worn, the leather will develop a natural patina, with the pull-up effect revealing subtle changes in character over time.
Details include antique gold eyelets and round waxed laces that elegantly accentuate the Oxford silhouette. It also comes with a leather swing tag embossed with a special 'FOR JAPAN' edition mark, honoring the Cobbs Lane factory in England.
Supporting the upper is the brand's iconic original 'bouncing sole.' This model adopts a slightly thicker black BEX sole. It features Goodyear-welted air-cushioned construction, the signature grooved outsole, the double stitching unique to the 1461 shoe, and black welt stitching.
This model is a 1461 shoe manufactured in the Northamptonshire factory specifically for the Japanese market in 2026, injecting craftsmanship that continues to cherish the brand's roots even in today's rapidly evolving world. The Cobbs Lane factory remains the heart of Dr. Martens and the center of the 'Made in England' collection, embodying traditional manufacturing methods, creativity, and human craftsmanship.
In addition to the 1461 shoe, a limited-edition 1460 boot using the same 'Black Mono' Classic Calf leather has also been produced at the Made in England factory and will be released simultaneously.
