The British footwear brand, Dr. Martens, is launching a Japan-exclusive “1461 Black Mono” model crafted from Classic Calf leather, handmade at its original factory in Northamptonshire, UK, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of “THE 1461 shoes,” one of the brand's symbolic origins.

Following the brand's first boot, “THE 1460,” THE 1461 shoes were the second iconic model to roll off the production line. They have been highly acclaimed as unisex 3-hole shoes for their durability, comfort, and versatile style. The model name is derived from its birth date, first manufactured on April 1, 1961.

For 65 years since its birth, THE 1461 shoes have welcomed diverse people worldwide into the Dr. Martens community. With a timeless and ageless silhouette, Dr. Martens' characteristic air-cushioned sole, and iconic yellow welt stitching, they have imprinted a vibrant “bouncing” soul on the feet of workers, musicians, artists, activists, and various other creators who continue to shape culture worldwide.

This anniversary model is produced at the Dr. Martens “Made in England” factory, using Classic Calf leather from C. F. Stead, a tannery founded in 1904 and based in Leeds. It is a collectible limited edition series incorporating the brand's unique design codes throughout.

The distinctive texture of full-grain leather is characterized by a deep, rich finish created by blending natural oils and waxes. As it ages with wear, you can enjoy natural changes in appearance due to the pull-up effect.

The details include antique gold eyelets and round waxed laces that elegantly tighten the Oxford silhouette, along with a special edition “FOR JAPAN” leather swing tag honoring the Cobbs Lane factory in the UK.

Supporting the upper is the brand's iconic original “bouncing sole.” The sole features a slightly thicker black BEX sole. It boasts an air-cushioned structure thanks to the Goodyear welt construction, signature grooved outsole, the double stitching unique to THE 1461 shoes, and black welt stitching.

This model is THE 1461 shoe manufactured by the Northamptonshire factory in 2026 exclusively for Japan, embodying craftsmanship that continues to cherish the brand's roots even in a rapidly evolving modern era. The Cobbs Lane factory remains the core of Dr. Martens, the center of the Made in England collection, embodying traditional manufacturing methods, creativity, and human handiwork.

In addition to THE 1461 shoes, a limited edition THE 1460 boot, also made with the same “Black Mono” Classic Calf leather, will be produced at the Made in England factory and released simultaneously.
