Freelance announcer Sakura Tazaki hosts the program 'SBI FX Trade presents Sakura Tazaki's Step Up! My LIFE' (every Monday from 9:00 PM to 9:30 PM). On the broadcast of Monday, March 23, radio DJ and narrator Fumika Hideshima appeared to discuss her 'professional philosophy as a radio DJ' and 'conversation techniques useful in daily life.'
Fumika Hideshima has been active as a radio DJ for many years. When Tazaki, feeling nervous about meeting such a senior figure in the broadcasting world, asked, 'Do you ever feel nervous when meeting someone for the first time, Hideshima-san?', Hideshima revealed her personal approach: 'Of course I get nervous. However, at the same time, I try to think, "The other person is just as nervous as I am." By thinking that way, a sense of camaraderie is born, and I feel like a sense of wanting to create a good atmosphere together with the other person begins to sprout.' When Tazaki followed up with a seasonal concern, asking, 'Spring is a time when opportunities for self-introductions increase; is there a way to speak well?', Hideshima replied, 'It is important not to try to show off your good side. I think it is best to start with topics you can empathize with, such as seasonal subjects.'
Intrigued by Hideshima's work, Tazaki asked, 'Do you take notes on topics to talk about on the radio in your daily life?' Hideshima answered, 'I take notes as if I were putting sticky notes on the small events of my daily life. Trivial, everyday scenes are often topics that anyone can empathize with. Especially in the case of radio, I try to keep in mind the feeling of talking about familiar topics to a close friend.' Tazaki agreed, saying, 'It is important to put sticky notes on small memories.' Hideshima also offered advice such as 'increasing your vocabulary by reading books of various genres' and 'the importance of accumulating various experiences, including failures,' which resonated with Tazaki.
Furthermore, Tazaki confessed her struggle: 'When I talk to someone for the first time, sometimes the conversation doesn't continue, and there are a few seconds of silence...' Hideshima explained the importance of not panicking: 'For you, Tazaki-san, a few seconds of silence might feel very long, but for the other person, that might just be their normal rhythm of conversation. Everyone has a different way of speaking and a different tempo. Instead of panicking and thinking you have to do something about it, it might be good to wait and look forward to what the other person will say next.'
Finally, Hideshima added, 'Rather than trying to speak well, it is important to have an attitude of listening carefully to what the other person has to say. If you do that, interest and curiosity about the other person will naturally arise, and I think the conversation will flourish.' Tazaki accepted this, saying, 'If you want to talk to someone, it is important to start by listening,' and vowed to step up as a radio DJ, stating, 'I want to do my best while keeping this advice in my heart.'
This was the final episode of 'Sakura Tazaki's Step Up! My LIFE,' which has been airing since October 2024. You can listen to it for up to one week using the radiko time-free function, so please be sure to check it out.
