JOGMEC (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Ichiro Takahara) conducted the first call for applications for the FY2026 Geothermal Power Resource Survey Project Subsidy Program between February 2, 2026, and March 16, 2026. As a result of rigorous screening, six projects were selected.

Ensuring a stable energy supply for Japan and establishing an appropriate energy supply and demand structure necessitate the urgent expansion of renewable energy introduction. Amidst this, geothermal power, which can generate electricity stably throughout the year regardless of seasons or weather, serves as a baseload power source and is highly anticipated as a project that contributes to regional revitalization.

On the other hand, geothermal resource development requires advanced technical survey stages to discover geothermal resources present underground, which increases the risks and costs associated with development.

Against this backdrop, this subsidy program aims to mitigate the unique development risks of underground resources and promote geothermal resource development efforts in Japan. It does so by providing subsidies for expenses recognized by JOGMEC to geothermal resource development operators, etc. (Note 1) and local geothermal-related corporations, etc. (Note 2) for conducting surface surveys, etc. or well drilling, etc. to understand geothermal resource volumes and clarify subsurface structures.

Major projects to which JOGMEC has provided subsidies in the past include the Matsuo Hachimantai Geothermal Power Plant (Iwate Prefecture), Minamiaso Yunotani Geothermal Power Plant (Kumamoto Prefecture), and Minamikayabe Geothermal Power Plant (Hokkaido), which are currently in operation, and the Katatsumuri Yama Power Plant (Akita Prefecture) and Kijiyama Geothermal Power Plant (Akita Prefecture), which are in the construction phase. We will continue to actively support the startup of new geothermal power plants.

(Note 1) "Geothermal resource development operators, etc." refers to Japanese corporations, etc. (excluding "local geothermal development corporations, etc.") that conduct subsidized projects aimed at introducing geothermal power.

(Note 2) "Local geothermal-related corporations, etc." refers to Japanese corporations, etc. with their main office located in a region where geothermal resources exist, and which conduct subsidized projects aimed at introducing geothermal power locally.
