What is FootGolf?
FootGolf is a new sport that fuses the different sports of soccer (football) and golf. Using a size 5 soccer ball, players play a round of 9 or 18 holes on a golf course. It is easy to understand if you imagine "playing golf by kicking a soccer ball."
After being codified in the Netherlands in 2009, FootGolf held its first World Cup in Hungary in 2012, the year the Federation for International FootGolf was established. It is already enjoyed in more than 40 countries, mainly in Europe and the United States, and is currently the most rapidly spreading and attention-grabbing sport. In January 2016, the 2nd World Cup opened in Argentina with 26 countries participating. Then, in December 2018, the 3rd World Cup was held in Morocco with a total of about 500 participants from 33 countries. From late May to early June 2023, the 4th tournament was held in Orlando, Florida, with about 1,000 participants from 39 countries. (The 4th World Cup was scheduled to be held in Japan from late September 2020, but was postponed to late September 2021 due to the impact of the new coronavirus infection spread, and subsequently canceled on January 28, 2021, by a resolution of the FIFG General Assembly.)
Moreover, in the United States, a leading country in FootGolf, it can already be played on nearly 600 courses, and in the UK, the number exceeds 200, increasing its recognition mainly in Europe and America. Domestically, our association was founded in February 2014, and immediately after, prize money tournaments such as the Japan Open were held. In 2017, the first domestic international tournament was held at the South Course of the prestigious Karuizawa 72 Golf. And as of March 2025, there are about 30 courses where FootGolf can be enjoyed domestically.
Currently, FootGolf is an observer member of GAISF (Global Association of International Sports Federations) and aims to become an official Olympic sport in the future.
