— In the hugely popular series 'My Hero Academia,' you play Tenya Iida, class representative of Class 1-A, who possesses the 'Engine' Quirk. Could you share your first impressions of the character and what makes him appealing?

Ishikawa: I absolutely love Iida-kun. Especially the way he values discipline—I’ve always thought that was really admirable, even from the first season. Rules are meant to be followed, and his unwavering commitment to that principle is truly impressive.

— His serious and rigid nature is certainly one of his biggest charms.

Ishikawa: That said, in the first season, Iida-kun was quite harsh toward those who broke the rules. But I think he changed significantly after the battle with the 'Back-Alley Gang' and the confrontation with the villain Stain in Season 2. He began to understand that those who break rules may have their own reasons and circumstances, allowing him to empathize with others.

— Indeed, his demeanor gradually became more flexible.

Ishikawa: He learned to empathize with others while also honestly confronting his own mistakes and emotions. His movements are still robot-like (laughs), but once he realized that valuing discipline is his personal value—not necessarily shared by everyone—he became a truly mature adult. I think he’s an ideal person.

— When portraying such a charismatic character like Iida-kun, what specific approaches have you taken?

Ishikawa: I always focus on the fact that he takes everything seriously. That’s really the only thing I keep in mind. Whether it’s toward classmates like Todoroki or Midoriya, or even in class—he always gives his full effort in every situation. That’s why even in comedic scenes, he’s completely serious, which adds intensity and volume to his voice. I interpret his overly earnest nature as making his movements stiff and robotic. He’s never trying to make others laugh, after all. …
