First Compost Facility Completed in Pererenan Village, Bali: Launching a New 'Food Waste Circular Model'

On May 10, 2026, Junior Chamber International Japan completed the first compost facility in Pererenan Village, Bali, designed to turn hotel food waste into fertilizer. Leveraging Japanese blower drying equipment and 'Bio-Fighter' deodorization technology, the initiative launches a localized system to circulate resources effectively.

Newly constructed compost inside the waste disposal facility

As part of the 'SMILE by ACTION' international contribution project undertaken by Junior Chamber International Japan (President: Hiromasa Kato, Location: VORT Hanzomon 7F, 2-12-1 Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter 'JCI Japan'), a compost facility constructed in Pererenan Village, Canggu area, Bali, Republic of Indonesia, was successfully completed on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

This facility was established to tackle the increasingly severe waste problem in Indonesia by composting food waste, which accounts for 60 to 70% of total waste, thereby reducing the amount of disposed garbage. With the cooperation of local hotels, farmers, and businesses, food waste separated at hotels is composted at this facility. The resulting compost is used by farmers to produce organic crops, which the hotels then purchase and serve at their restaurants, aiming for a regional closed loop of resources and economy. Furthermore, to commemorate the completion of the compost facility, a completion ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 21.

Points of Interest

■ Designed Compost Equipment with Blowers
Composting fails if the food waste has too much moisture, leading to an increase in putrefactive bacteria and becoming a cause of bad odors. In Indonesia, which is hot and humid throughout the year, treating food waste that contains a lot of moisture from rain and other sources has been a challenge. Therefore, we designed the equipment by attaching blowers to dry the food waste, allowing the composting process to proceed smoothly.

■ Utilizing Bio-Fighter Technology
Bio-Fighter is a 100% natural deodorant made from lactic acid bacteria, developed by Ishibashi Co., Ltd. located in Toyama Prefecture. Because it uses absolutely no chemical substances, it is environmentally friendly. It is a proven technology that breaks down bad odors at the molecular level, achieving data showing a 99.9% reduction in odor. Because exporting it overseas is not possible, we successfully developed a product from local plants in cooperation with the local corporation su-re.co. By using this in the composting process, we not only suppressed bad odors but also accelerated the initial decomposition of food waste and stabilized aerobic fermentation.

Project Overview

■ Implementation Background
Indonesia is said to be the largest generator of municipal waste in Southeast Asia, with a total annual waste output of approximately 65 million tons, ranking 5th in the world. Particularly in Bali, one of the world's leading resort destinations, a rapid surge in waste output accompanying the increase in tourists has made food waste management a critical issue. Furthermore, waste disposal in this region relies heavily on landfills. Food waste, which makes up 60 to 70% of the total, lacks adequate systems for separation, composting, and biogas conversion, leading to environmental risks such as bad odors, hygiene problems, and methane gas generation.

To solve these problems, JCI Japan collaborated with environmental expert Dr. Takeshi Takama (CEO of su-re.co) to establish a closed-loop food waste circulation model that treats food waste as a resource. With the cooperation of local hotels, farmers, and businesses, we aim for a regional closed loop of resources and the economy.

■ Specific Methods
Establishment of New Compost
We will install a compost capable of composting approximately 100 kg of waste per day in a 10m x 10m (approx. 100 sq meters) space inside the waste disposal facility (TPS Pererenan) in Pererenan Village, Bali, Republic of Indonesia.

Developing Food Waste Collection and Composting Processes
We will standardize the criteria and procedures for food waste separation among cooperating hotels. The separated food waste will be collected via a dedicated route and consolidated for processing at the composting facility. This will decrease the amount of food waste sent to landfills and form a recycling system with low environmental impact.
