This initiative explores the efficiency and advancement of maintenance work on substation equipment through automated flights using remote operation technology via a drone port. It addresses the challenge of increased workload in substation patrols due to future labor shortages.

Background In substations that support social infrastructure, there is a growing need to improve the efficiency and sophistication of patrol and inspection tasks due to aging equipment and labor shortages. Furthermore, railway substations are widely dispersed along lines, posing a challenge with significant travel time required.

To solve these issues, there are high expectations for building a maintenance model optimized for railway infrastructure using remote operations (Note 1) with drone ports. However, railway substations have a unique environment with large fluctuations in magnetic fields caused by current changes from train operations. For practical implementation, there are numerous challenges, not only technical aspects like stable drone flight in such environments but also practical issues such as operational methods and a correct understanding of related laws and regulations.

Based on this situation, Skypeak, JR Central, and KDDI Smart Drone conducted this demonstration to study the efficiency and implementation of patrol inspections based on remote and automated flights.

Results The demonstration confirmed that stable automated operation is possible in the environment of a railway substation. It also verified that it is possible to capture images of major equipment and meters with an eye toward replacing visual inspections. In addition to technical verification, this demonstration involved studying remote operation methods, coordinating with stakeholders, and organizing flight applications and related legal regulations, thereby conducting a study envisioned for practical use.

(Note 1) Remote operation is an operational mode where a drone port and communication network are used to automatically perform everything from takeoff and landing to flight and filming, without a pilot on site. By flying automatically along a preset route, it is expected to streamline periodic patrols and inspection tasks.
