The Japan Deaf Beach Volleyball Association (hereinafter referred to as "the Association") has promoted the creation of an environment where everyone can enjoy sports, regardless of disabilities, physical differences, athletic abilities, age, or gender, with the core theme of "realizing normalization in sports" since its establishment. Following the success of the "Sitting Beach Volleyball Tournament" held in March 2026, we are pleased to report on our future activity policies and new initiatives.

■ Beaches for Everyone: Creating an Inclusive Environment

The beach is a symbol of summer for many and a place to enjoy sports and leisure. However, due to the nature of sand, mobility itself has been a significant barrier for wheelchair users. The Association is actively promoting the development of a beach environment where wheelchair users can move safely and freely. Through the installation of access mats (pathways exclusively for sandy beaches) that can be traveled on even on the sand and advocacy for making facilities barrier-free, we aim to realize a society where people with disabilities can access the beach as a matter of course.

In addition, for those who have difficulty accessing the beach due to geographical or physical reasons, we regularly hold "City Special Beach Tournaments" by setting up special beach courts in plazas and parks in urban areas. We also invite overseas teams as international goodwill tournaments, contributing to the promotion of international understanding through sports exchanges. By providing an opportunity to experience the intensity and fun of beach volleyball in the city even for those who cannot go to the sandy beach, we are expanding the base of sports spectating.

■ First "Sitting Beach Volleyball Tournament": A Historic Step in Para-Deaf Collaboration

In March 2026, the Association, in collaboration with the Japan Para Volleyball Association, held Japan's first para-deaf collaborative "Sitting Beach Volleyball Tournament". This tournament is a groundbreaking attempt that transcends the boundaries between deaf sports (sports for the hearing impaired) and parasports.

Sitting beach volleyball is a sport played with players' buttocks on the sand. This competition format embodies normalization in the following ways:

- It can be played under the same rules regardless of the presence or absence of disabilities.
- Playing in a sitting position largely eliminates differences in height and physical build.
- Differences in athletic ability are less likely to be a factor deciding the outcome, allowing teamwork and tactics to shine.
- Mixed team formations transcending gender and age can be naturally realized.

In this tournament, deaf athletes with hearing impairments and para-athletes with physical disabilities stood on the same court and engaged in heated matches. Participating athletes commented, "I'm glad we could work towards the same goal transcending the types of disabilities," and "I felt both the fun of the competition and the joy of playing together." We are considering holding this regularly and expanding it nationwide in the future.
