In 2020, the JAL Group became the first Japanese airline to declare a goal of net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. As a Green Transformation (GX) management target, the group aimed to keep actual CO2 emissions from aircraft below FY2019 levels (9.21 million tons) by FY2025.
Through the transition to fuel-efficient aircraft and operational improvements, combined with the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and carbon credits, JAL has achieved its FY2025 targets. Simultaneously, the goal of replacing 1% of total fuel loading (approx. 40,000 kiloliters) with SAF by FY2025 was also met.
■ Promoting the Use of CORSIA-Eligible Fuels and Credits
CORSIA is an international framework established by ICAO, mandating airlines worldwide to monitor and reduce CO2 emissions through SAF and credits. The JAL Group began procuring CORSIA-eligible SAF in FY2024 and started the procurement and retirement of CORSIA-eligible credits in FY2025. JAL will continue to work on reducing net CO2 emissions while ensuring transparency and quality through the CORSIA framework.
To achieve its FY2030 management goal of a 10% reduction from FY2019 levels (8.28 million tons), JAL has set a new target to reduce CO2 emissions from fuel combustion by 5% using SAF by FY2030. JAL will also continue working toward its existing goal of replacing 10% of total fuel with SAF. While striving for maximum CO2 reduction within the value chain through fuel-efficient aircraft, operational efficiency, and SAF, JAL will also continue to utilize CORSIA-eligible credits for reductions outside the value chain.
