The JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) Kagoshima Branch (Branch Manager: Kentaro Uehara) has collaborated with the Ministry of the Environment to produce an awareness video aimed at preventing traffic accidents (hereinafter referred to as "roadkill") involving the Amami rabbit, an endemic species found only on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima. The video was released on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
Background of the Video Production: Record-High Number of Roadkill Incidents
〇 Record-high number of accidents Roadkill involving the Amami rabbit has been increasing in recent years. 2025 saw the highest number of roadkill incidents on record.*
〇 Changes in habitat Due to the success of conservation efforts, the rabbits have begun appearing on roads closer to human settlements, increasing the danger in areas where accidents were previously rare.
〇 Nighttime dangers Amami rabbits are nocturnal and have a tendency to suddenly dart out onto forest roads and main highways at night. When driving at night, please be aware of sudden movements and drive at a reduced speed.
Video Overview The newly produced video introduces the characteristics of the Amami rabbit and explains points to be aware of when driving at night—information that could not be fully conveyed through previous static images or text-based warnings. It also highlights key points for drivers to keep in mind, such as reducing speed at night.
The video is currently available on the JAF Kagoshima Branch local information page. We also plan to disseminate this information widely by sharing the video on the social media accounts of related organizations.
Giveaway Campaign To coincide with the release of the video, we are holding a giveaway campaign where you can enjoy the unique charms of Amami. We are giving away an assortment of sweets provided by "Amami no Sato," a spot where you can experience the nature and culture of Amami. This campaign is exclusive to JAF members.
