After working at ITOCHU Corporation, the Mori Art Museum Establishment Preparation Office, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, she became a freelance curator and culture writer. In 2005, she won the 1st Japan Love Story Award for "Waiting for Kafka," and debuted as an author the following year, 2006. In 2012, she won the 25th Yamamoto Shugoro Prize for "The Canvas of Paradise," the 36th Nitta Jiro Literature Prize for "Mr. Leach" in 2017, and the 52nd Izumi Kyoka Literature Prize for "Blooming on the Board" in 2024.
