A New Form of Chair: Original yet Standard, and Easy to Use
With the concept of "Ingenious design," NII is a furniture brand that transforms the office into a vibrant stage where people gather, connect, and inspire one another. Through innovative collections created in collaboration with designers from Japan and abroad, NII encourages thought, collaboration, and challenges, realizing a new place for value creation where the worker is the protagonist.
The new collections announced this time consist of three products involving not only the London-based design studio Industrial Facility but also Itoki's own Kohei Wada and Hirotaka Tako. The lineup includes 'HAKUSAN' by Industrial Facility, 'BIWA' by Wada, and 'ALLROUND' by Tako.
This lineup is based on connecting people and supports diverse activities such as work, meetings, and communication. While being original, they blend naturally into the space, drawing out people's movements and relationships, and presenting a new way for chairs to be.

HAKUSAN
DESIGN HAKUSAN is a chair that combines individuality and universality, made with a die-cast aluminum and steel frame and a single plywood shell. The flowing silhouette, where the frame and armrests are integrated, expresses both lightness and structural strength, bringing a quiet yet certain presence to the space. By using thicker steel pipes than typical stacking chairs, it achieves a look that combines a light feel with the calm stability of a dining chair. The contrast of materials and balanced proportions allow it to emit a subtle individuality while blending naturally into the space.
FUNCTION It is designed for effortless handling in everyday actions like stacking and moving. By placing the center of gravity directly under the arms, it suppresses swaying when lifted, creating an operability that feels lighter than its actual weight. The structure allows for a natural grip from the front, enabling smooth stacking with minimal movement. It is a chair that becomes a new standard, its ease of use experienced through repeated use.
DESIGNER’S COMMENT HAKUSAN is a chair with universality. It uses simple materials and features a concise, refined silhouette. It is made to be approachable in every aspect, comfortable for both the eyes and the body. In other words, the universality of HAKUSAN is shaped by harmonizing familiar elements and elevating them into something special. An example of this is the design that places the chair's center of gravity in the middle. This makes lifting and horizontal stacking surprisingly smooth. It is a product that brings universal joy, reflecting an orthodox perspective on how to handle and move the chair, and even how to spend time with it.

Industrial Facility Founded in 2002 by Kim Colin and Sam Hecht, Industrial Facility is a design office that reflects a deep consideration for form and a unique understanding of modern life. Their approach of creating beauty from utility in products, furniture, and exhibitions is highly regarded for its philosophical and practical methods. Colin and Hecht have served as creative directors for Muji, Herman Miller, and Mattiazzi, and have international clients such as Wästberg, &Tradition, and Santa & Cole. They hold the title of Royal Designer for Industry and their works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Design Museum in Helsinki, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A complete collection of their works was published by Phaidon Press in 2018.
BIWA
DESIGN BIWA is a work chair with a soft, organic form that envelops the body and exudes a calm presence in the space. The smoothly continuous shell shape and the seemingly floating shoulder rest provide a sense of both lightness and security, accommodating free seating postures not bound to a single position. It is a new style of chair that has a lounge-like appearance while being equipped with the functions required for work.
A rich variety of 21 fabric colors are available, allowing it to harmonize with various spaces.
FUNCTION It is equipped with the basic, essential functions for work, such as seat height adjustment, smooth synchro-locking, and initial locking angle fixation. The back is designed to accommodate free seating postures, and the enveloping sides can also be used as armrests. It accepts the gentle rocking that occurs with every change in posture, seamlessly connecting concentration and relaxation. The floating shoulder rest has a light appearance, yet its supportive shape provides a solid sense of security, allowing you to rest your body without interrupting your thoughts.
DESIGNER’S COMMENT BIWA was designed with the desire to appeal to human emotions through a more universal form of furniture, without visually emphasizing the functionality required of a task chair. Offices are increasingly transforming into vibrant places where new value is born from people's thoughts and collaborations. Accordingly, the design of the furniture placed there should also be updated from the conventional framework of "office furniture."
The shoulder rest, which appears to be floating on the soft, lounge-chair-like silhouette, is an iconic point that moves the viewer's heart. The name BIWA comes from the Japanese lute, the motif for its inclusive silhouette. And this chair is manufactured in a factory near Lake Biwa.
Kohei Wada (Itoki Product Design Department) NII DESIGN TEAM Product Designer. With a background in engineering, including mechanism and structural design, and knowledge of ergonomics, he excels at chair design that fuses functionality, comfort, and styling at a high level. At Itoki, he has consistently been in charge of designing "things to sit on," from office task chairs to meeting chairs, lounge chairs, sofas, and lobby chairs for public spaces. His curiosity for chair design, a product that is closest to the human body and deeply involved in life, is endless. He has won numerous awards, including the iF Design Award GOLD, Red Dot Design Award, and GOOD DESIGN Award.
ALLROUND
DESIGN ALLROUND is a product with a friendly and light impression, composed of a rounded form and smooth curved surfaces. Its simple composition with a single support column and minimalist appearance from its metal material allows it to blend quietly into the space, harmonizing with its surroundings without being overly assertive. The sculpted, pared-down shape enhances its roundness as light reflects off it, creating a subtle presence in the space while softly changing its expression.
FUNCTION Casters* are built into the base, a structure that is not visible externally, realizing a light movement as if it's gliding. By moving it naturally when needed and changing its position according to the situation, it flexibly adapts to the flow of people's movements and conversations. It functions not only as a stool but also as a simple table, increasing layout freedom in workshops, meetings, and lounge spaces. It plays an all-around role in various scenes within the office space. *Casters are only built into the STOOL type.
DESIGNER’S COMMENT The name ALLROUND has a double meaning: the large curved surfaces (full fillet) applied to all edges, and the tool as an "all-rounder" that can be used in various scenes.
Despite being made of robust metal, the color variations developed in various colors and finishes, combined with the large rounded shape, give a somewhat melting, soft impression. In addition to the visual gentleness from the rounded edges, the flat-packable packaging is also a design that considers both people and the environment. A high stool with a footrest of the same shape as the seat is also available, and similarly, as a minimalist rotating body, it aims to be a long-loved presence that naturally fits into spaces and architecture.
