Intelligence Design Inc. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Takuji Nakazawa; hereinafter "the Company") conducted human flow analysis using AI cameras as part of a social experiment organized by the Otemachi Walkway Management Association (hereinafter "this Initiative").
In this Initiative, benches and art were installed on a pedestrian-only road. By quantitatively grasping and comparing the changes in human flow during installation and after removal, the impact of spatial design on human behavior (behavioral change) was quantitatively verified.

◆ Background of this Initiative: Bringing AI, a Common Yardstick, to "Town Development" Based on Intuition
In recent years, "placemaking" (creating comfortable spaces) utilizing pedestrian-only roads and open spaces has become active. However, the evaluation of "how much the space was utilized" often remains subjective, relying on visual observation by researchers or vague impressions like "it seemed lively," leading to a lack of data for continuous policy improvement.
This Initiative challenged to visualize qualitative changes in the space, such as "changes in pedestrian volume" and "the presence or absence of lingering," by comparatively analyzing human flow with AI cameras during the installation and after the removal of the bench art.
Implementation Overview
Implementation Period: November 11, 2025 - December 28, 2025
Measurement Location: Otemachi Kawabata Green Road (Pedestrian-only road)
Verification Objectives
Changes in pedestrian traffic volume due to furniture installation (Before/After comparison)
Understanding spatial usage trends by time of day

◆ Results of this Initiative
By comparing the period with the bench art installed to the period after its removal, the impact of spatial design on human flow and usage was evaluated.
1. Unbiased Evaluation Achieved
AI analysis ensures measurement with a consistent standard, unaffected by the subjectivity of individual researchers. This allows for the sharing of social experiment effects with stakeholders backed by objective evidence. Furthermore, it simultaneously achieves cost reduction and improved evaluation accuracy compared to traditional visual observation.
2. Efficient PDCA Cycle Realized
Compared to traditional surveys that took several weeks to compile handwritten questionnaires, immediate feedback is possible with digital data. This improves the verification accuracy of social experiments and accelerates the pace towards the next policy.
◆ Feedback from the Person in Charge
Following the analysis results, the implementation manager provided the following feedback:
"In this social experiment, we aimed to verify whether human flow changes and whether the bench art would be used when subtly installed in daily life. The high-precision human flow tracking enabled by AI human flow analysis was realized, and we obtained beneficial results, such as quantitatively confirming that there is a certain level of demand for benches. We also greatly appreciated that this human flow survey could be conducted at a lower cost than manual measurement."
◆ Future Outlook
The Company will continue to leverage its AI camera human flow analysis technology in the following areas:
・Evaluation of pedestrian space utilization ・Verification of the effects of parklets and temporary furniture in promoting space usage ・Improvement of public space design ・Joint research with municipalities, construction consultants, and developers
Furthermore, by going beyond simply tracking pedestrian volume to quantitatively capture behavioral changes in spaces, we will contribute to evidence-based urban space creation.
About the AI Camera Solution "IDEA"
"IDEA" promotes UDX (Urban Digital Transformation) through image recognition technology that meets diverse needs. It goes beyond simple "detection" to visualize the movements of cities and nature, providing scientific grounds for the next steps.
