IHI Corporation has signed a cooperation agreement for a joint demonstration (hereinafter referred to as "this project") to demonstrate a 100% ammonia-fired gas turbine (IHI IM270 gas turbine) with Gentari Hydrogen Sdn. Bhd, a subsidiary of clean energy solutions company Gentari, and a subsidiary of Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG).

The planned construction site for the gas turbine is within the PCG site in Terengganu, Malaysia. The goal is to demonstrate the world's first 100% ammonia-fired gas turbine to be introduced to a commercial plant in fiscal 2027.

In addition, the parties have agreed to proceed with studies aimed at expanding the ammonia value chain and creating synergies, primarily in the Asia-Pacific region, by leveraging the expertise and technologies of IHI and the Petronas Group.

In conjunction with the signing of the agreement, PETRONAS and IHI held a commemorative ceremony for this project in the presence of officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

This project was registered as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the 1st AZEC (Asia Zero Emission Community) Leaders Meeting and was selected as a project under METI's "Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Project (Large-scale Demonstration in ASEAN Member States)".
It will also contribute to promoting decarbonization under the "National Energy Transition Roadmap" announced by the Malaysian government in 2023, and to the formation of a hydrogen utilization society under the "Hydrogen Economy & Technology Roadmap".

IHI has contributed to the development of the country's energy infrastructure for over 50 years. Moving forward, IHI will continue to collaborate with the Malaysian government and the Petronas Group to proceed with studies aimed at decarbonizing the Asia-Pacific region and expanding the value chain for clean ammonia, providing various solutions that suit the needs of local communities and customers.
