Background of "What Mayors Try!"

The need for municipal public relations is higher than ever. There are two main reasons for this.

First, it is necessary to convey the appeal of the region to people living outside the region, tourists, and media representatives. In April 2024, the "Population Strategy Council," a private think tank, released an analysis stating that 744 municipalities, or 40% of the total, could see their female population aged 20-30 halved by 2050, potentially leading to their "eventual disappearance." To protect precious hometowns from "disappearance," attracting people from outside the region, such as through hometown tax donations, tourism, new residents, and businesses, is an urgent issue.

The second reason is the need for municipal public relations for local residents. A survey conducted by the "Association for the Promotion of Bright Elections" after the 2023 unified local elections revealed that 54.1% of voters found it difficult to decide whom to vote for because they did not understand the candidates' personalities or policies, the lowest figure on record. Although municipal mayors are the closest and most important politicians to the lives of the region, there are very few opportunities to learn about their work and personalities.

In response to this growing demand, the YouTube program "What Mayors Try!" was launched in May 2024 to allow people from outside the region to learn about the charms of their respective areas and to increase opportunities for local residents to learn about the initiatives of their mayors and local governments.

1988: Dispatched to the Kameoka City Urban Greenery Association Foundation.

1994: Appointed Secretary-General of the Kameoka City Urban Greenery Association Foundation.

2003: Elected as a member of the Kameoka City Council.

2007: Elected as a member of the Kyoto Prefectural Assembly.

2011: Re-elected as a member of the Kyoto Prefectural Assembly.

2015: Inaugurated as the 7th Mayor of Kameoka.

2019: Inaugurated as Mayor of Kameoka (2nd term).

Appointed Vice Chairman of the Special Committee on Environmental Measures of the National Association of Mayors.

Appointed Councilor of the Japan Containers and Packaging Recycling Association.

Appointed Secretary-General of the National Association of Mayors for Town Development with Flowers and Greenery to Consider the Future of Children and the Region.

2021: Visiting Professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture.
