Toho Representative Mountain Worship and Shugendo Sacred Site, Dewasanzan Shrine Installs "Shrine Navita"
Display Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; President: Takahiro Tokumo; hereinafter "the Company") has installed Shrine Navita at Dewasanzan Shrine (Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture).
Through the installation of Shrine Navita at Dewasanzan Shrine, the Company aims to contribute to society using its latest technology, promoting proper Japanese culture and shrine knowledge to diverse worshipers, and further improving the convenience of guiding within the shrine precincts. This project was carried out at the initiative of Dewasanzan Shrine.
Dewasanzan, a sacred site of mountain worship and Shugendo representing the Tohoku region, is a general term for "Mount Haguro," representing the present, "Mount Gassan," representing the past, and "Mount Yudono," representing the future. It has been known as one of Japan's foremost sacred places for over 1400 years since its founding.
The Sanjingosaiden (Three Deities Combined Shrine) located at the summit of Mount Haguro enshrines the three deities of the three mountains of Dewasanzan. The shrine building is unique to the Haguro school of ancient Shugendo, boasting a magnificent thatched roof measuring 2.1 meters thick, making it one of the largest in Japan, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Furthermore, the "Five-Storied Pagoda" located before the first slope of the Mount Haguro pilgrimage route is the oldest pagoda in the Tohoku region and was designated a National Treasure in 1966.
The Shrine Navita installed at Dewasanzan Shrine measures 2,100mm in height, 1,754mm in width, and 375mm in depth. On the right side, an Ema (votive tablet) shaped illuminated LED advertisement displays information about sponsoring companies and shops. On the left side, a 49-inch touch-screen digital signage (*) is installed. Visitors can view the shrine's history, event information, precinct guide, and proper etiquette for worship and purification rituals in Japanese and English.
*Digital signage operating hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (may vary depending on the season).
### Comment from Kensuke Yoshizumi, Gonnegi of Dewasanzan Shrine, regarding the installation of Shrine Navita
"I feel that the digital signage installed this time has been carefully designed with colors and other aspects to harmonize with the overall scenery of the shrine surrounded by nature and with the Chozuya (purification fountain) in front of the Sanjingosaiden. Also, since our shrine precincts are very vast, it is difficult to grasp all the information about the entire Dewasanzan, but I believe that the installed digital signage, which can systematically cover various information, is extremely useful.
Yamagata Prefecture is highly popular as a Japanese travel destination overseas, and in recent years, the number of foreign visitors to our shrine has also increased. On the other hand, there have been cases where it was difficult to provide guidance in foreign languages about specific worship methods unique to shrines. In such circumstances, we find great value in being able to convey accurate information about traditional Japanese culture through multilingual guidance via digital signage, in addition to reducing the burden on shrine priests."
