In this exhibition, focusing on modern Japanese literature, we introduce works that stimulate the five senses, such as Motojiro Kajii's "Lemon" and Kenji Miyazawa's "Gauche the Cellist." Furthermore, we recreate scenes from these works, focusing on each sense, allowing you to enjoy a literary experience that you can feel with your body, not just "read," by actually smelling scents and listening to music.

In addition to works familiar from textbooks, mysterious works not taught in school will also be displayed. Why not immerse yourself deeper into the stories by seeing, touching, and smelling the sharp and sometimes delicate expressions of literary masters, not just reading their words?

We invite you to such a fascinating world that will give you goosebumps and send shivers down your spine.

See, Smell, Touch, and Experience That One Scene

At the entrance to the exhibition, beyond the noren curtain, lemons placed on a stack of art books greet you. Here, focusing on one of the five senses, olfaction, we feature Motojiro Kajii's "Lemon" and Kotaro Takamura's "Elegy of Lemon." How are lemons expressed in each work, and what effects do they bring about? While reading excerpts from poems and novels, try smelling the actual lemon scent on the spot and confirm it with your own nose. The sour scent of lemon will deeply draw you into the world of literature.

In the center of the exhibition room, a grand antique chair is placed, accompanied by an excerpt from Edogawa Ranpo's "The Human Chair." Please feel free to sit down. At first glance, it's just a chair, but once you've touched upon the content of "The Human Chair" and then sit, it might no longer be just a chair. Once you know, you might find yourself becoming one of the characters in the eerie yet fascinating world woven by the literary master.

Introducing Everything from Nostalgic Textbook Works to the Latest Film Adaptations

The enjoyment of literary works is not limited to "reading." If you lift your gaze slightly from the text, you will see that literary works unfold in various forms, expanding the ways to enjoy them. For example, audiobooks of literary works offer the enjoyment of "listening." In this exhibition, you can compare different narrators reading excerpts from Soseki Natsume's "Ten Nights of Dreams - The First Night" and Takeo Arishima's "A Bunch of Grapes." How do the differences in the narrators' voices, whether female or male, young or deep, change the impression of the story, even with the same text?

In addition, we introduce various ways to enjoy literary works from all angles, including a corner for enjoying book cover designs by "viewing," a corner for looking back at literary works learned in school, and a corner for film adaptations.

Please spend a time that will make you want to pick up a book and take it home.

There's also a corner to look back at literary works found in textbooks
