Tomamu's Summer Spectacle 'Unkai Terrace'

Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, a nature wonderland resort where you can feel the land of Hokkaido, began this season's operation of 'Unkai Terrace' on May 13, 2026. On the first day, the customary opening ceremony was held, celebrating the start of the season with visitors. The Unkai Terrace, which began with a gondola maintenance staff's desire to 'let customers see this spectacular view,' is expected to reach a cumulative total of 2 million visitors this summer.

To coincide with this milestone, the participatory project 'Cloud Wish' has been launched. In addition, a wide range of experiences beyond just viewing the scenery is available, such as unique observation spots and 'Unkai Yoga,' offering various ways to spend time above the clouds.

What is Unkai Terrace

Unkai Terrace is an observation facility located on Mt. Tomamu at an altitude of 1,088 meters, where you can enjoy a dynamic sea of clouds and various other cloud formations when weather conditions are right. The summit can be accessed via a 13-minute one-way ride on the Unkai Gondola. Starting this season, an advance reservation system has been introduced for gondola rides, reducing waiting times for a more comfortable experience. Furthermore, under the 'Cloud9 Plan,' which proposes nine ways to spend time at Unkai Terrace, you can enjoy the sea of clouds and magnificent nature from different altitudes and angles by strolling around the entire mountain and visiting unique observation spots. Currently, seven spots have been completed, allowing visitors to spend their time as they wish at each location.

On May 13, 2026, an opening ceremony was held to mark the start of this season's 'Unkai Terrace' operation. At the venue, the opening was celebrated with a 'Cloud Release,' where soap bubbles resembling clouds were released, and a 'Champagne Opening.' In the clear air at an altitude of 1,088m, a vibrant start was made with 594 customers. The Unkai Terrace manager expressed his thoughts, saying, 'All of us staff will think about what we can do every day to deliver the most memorable morning to our customers.'

Since its opening, Unkai Terrace has been visited by many people, reaching a cumulative total of 1.93 million visitors by the end of the 2025 season, and is expected to surpass 2 million this summer. In line with this, the visitor participation event 'Cloud Wish' has been launched. Capsules containing written wishes are regarded as 'droplets of wishes' and are put into a cloud-shaped frame. Visitors can enjoy a sense of unity as the cloud object is completed by everyone's wishes, and it's also possible to take memorable photos of their trip with the object and a sign counting the number of visitors in the background. A ceremony to commemorate the 2 millionth visitor is also planned.

In the past, the gondola carried many customers during the winter ski season but was used for maintenance work in the summer. Amidst this, the 'Unkai Terrace' was born from the desire of staff who routinely saw the sea of clouds during summer maintenance work to 'let customers see it too.' Since then, Unkai Terrace celebrates its 21st year. As the sea of clouds at Tomamu tends to occur in the morning, staff continue to propose various experiences with the hope that visitors will have the 'best morning.'
