Artists Gathered at the 'Cafe' - From Impressionists to Van Gogh, Lautrec, and Picasso
Exhibition Period: Saturday, June 13, 2026 - Wednesday, September 23 (holiday)
Organizers: Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Hiroshima Museum of Art Public Interest Incorporated Foundation
In late 19th-century Paris, artists like Manet and those later known as Impressionists gathered in cafes to engage in lively discussions. If modern cafes are places of relaxation, the cafes, cabarets, and dance halls of that era were not only for eating, drinking, and entertainment but also became places where people interacted and new art was born. It was also the beginning of a new era where art blended with the masses, breaking away from the Salon (official exhibition).
In 1897, the Catalan painter Casas opened "Els Quatre Gats" (Four Cats) in Barcelona, modeled after the famous Montmartre establishment "Le Chat Noir" (Black Cat). The young Picasso also frequented it. Picasso was greatly influenced by the pleasure and loneliness depicted by Lautrec and Casas in the "cafe" setting, leading him to his "Blue Period."
This exhibition will showcase the breadth of art born in "cafes" through approximately 130 masterpieces by Impressionists, Van Gogh, Lautrec, and Picasso, along with the treasured masterpiece "Madeleine" by Casas, a pride of Barcelona.
