TOPPAN Inc. (Head Office: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Haruhiko Noguchi; hereinafter "TOPPAN") will begin offering its non-cloud transparent interpretation display "UCDisplay® LIVE" (hereinafter "this service") on April 3, 2026.

This service is an implementation of automatic interpretation functionality that operates in a non-communication environment, integrated into the "UCDisplay®" series of transparent interpretation displays for reception desks. It achieves near real-time automatic interpretation in a highly secure environment where conversation data does not pass through external servers. This makes it available for face-to-face consultation services in public institutions, medical institutions, and financial institutions that handle highly confidential information requiring strict data protection requirements on the internet, as well as in locations with unstable communication environments.

■ Background of Development

In recent years, with the increase in foreign residents and visitors to Japan, the necessity for multilingual support in counter services has grown. Particularly in interviews involving complex content, traditional sequential interpretation methods, which translate after the speaker finishes their utterance, caused time lags in each conversation, burdening both visitors and staff and leading to decreased operational efficiency.

Furthermore, in sectors such as public, medical, and financial institutions, highly confidential information is often handled. General translation services that process and store data on external cloud servers via the internet faced challenges in adoption due to information leakage risks and data sovereignty concerns, leaving on-site issues unresolved.

Additionally, there was a challenge in stably utilizing machine translation in locations with unstable communication environments, such as inside factories or mountainous areas.

In response to these circumstances, TOPPAN developed "UCDisplay® LIVE," which combines transparent display technology pursuing natural face-to-face communication with enhanced security and translation speed.

This service leverages the knowledge gained from the "LiveTra®" automatic interpretation system for presentations, which began sales last year, to achieve a user interface and operability that facilitates smoother two-way interaction at reception desks.

■ Features

1. Expanded Scope of Use through Automatic Interpretation

This service is equipped with an automatic interpretation function that conveys translation results simultaneously with the speaker's utterance. It significantly shortens communication time compared to conventional sequential interpretation, minimizing conversation interruptions. This allows for its use in operations requiring more complex and continuous dialogue, such as various consultations and interviews, in addition to traditional counter inquiries.

2. Confidential Data Protection through Non-Communication Configuration

Translation processing is completed within the installed device. This prevents conversation data from being sent to or stored on external clouds via the internet, making it usable in public, medical, and financial institutions, etc., that require strict external communication security.

3. Log Extraction and Deletion

Translation logs can be extracted and deleted by the administrator at any desired time. While it is possible to extract and confirm translation history, deleting it allows for operations that do not leave conversation history within the system.

4. Continuous Updates through Proper Noun Registration

Since this service performs translation processing in an individualized environment, proper nouns can be freely registered for each terminal. Pre-registration before implementation and regular registration after implementation are expected to improve accuracy in specialized fields and continuously enhance translation accuracy.

5. Implementation of Automatic Language Recognition Function

The device is equipped with a function that automatically recognizes the speaker's language. Even if the other party's language is not known in advance, translation conversations can be initiated within the supported languages.
