Miran Fukuda "Dotou-zu (Raging Waves)"

From the two swirling patterns depicted on the paulownia wood ceiling panels of the Obuse Uwamachi festival floats, which are "recently popularly called 'Male Wave' and 'Female Wave,' and both are referred to as 'Dotou-zu' (Raging Waves)" (Note 1), I associated the meaning of "Dotou" with something intense and powerful, or an aggressive attack. Also, from the statement that "Hokusai's obsession to approach the origin of life residing in the waves can be felt in the swirling patterns of 'Dotou-zu' that dive deep into the seabed" (Note 2), I combined the two patterns to create an image where the spray of the male wave submerges into the female wave, giving concrete form to Hokusai's obsession with the origin of life. The fact that "it is unclear in which direction the wave patterns were originally arranged during production..." (Note 3) allowed me the freedom to reconstruct the waves, quoting Hokusai's waves directly without alteration. It is thought that the popular name for the waves in recent years came from the form implicitly suggested within the original imagery. (Comment: Miran Fukuda)
