Hochi Shimbun-sha (President & CEO: Tsuyoshi Hasegawa), the publisher of Sports Hochi, has released a special tabloid edition (all color, 8 pages) of its community quarterly paper 'Sumida Hochi,' which is distributed free of charge primarily in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, where the Tokyo headquarters is located. The Edo-Tokyo Museum, which has undergone extensive renovations for approximately four years, will be 'revived' on March 31st. The unique building designed by architect Kiyonori Kikutake is a spot full of new attractions. With actor Shunsuke Kazama, a native of Sumida Ward, appointed as an応援サポーター (support supporter) for the 'Edohaku Renewal,' you can time-slip to the Edo period from the streets of Sumida! The special edition introduces limited-time events on the day and new highlights of the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and also includes a special feature of 'Ryo-goku Machi Aruki Kawaraban' (last issue) produced by the Sumida Ward Tourism Division.
In anticipation of the Edo-Tokyo Museum's renewal opening after four years, Sumida Town will host a series of commemorative events on March 31st around the west exit of JR Ryogoku Station under the theme 'Welcome Back! Edohaku.' At Edo NOREN, directly connected to the station, there will be menko (traditional Japanese toy) Edo play and demonstrations by traditional craft preservation societies. At Ryogoku Station Hirokoji, in addition to sumo songs, performers dressed as Edo-era yokai will gather to recreate the Edo yokai boom. A 'song and dance performance' inspired by the Obon dances that were popular during that era will be presented, along with parades. The event schedule will be published along with details of the events, and highlights of the Edo-Tokyo Museum will be introduced with photos.
