Hochi Shimbun (President: Tsuyoshi Hasegawa), publisher of Sports Hochi, has issued a special tabloid edition (all color, 8 pages) of its community quarterly paper "Sumida Hochi," distributed free of charge primarily in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, where its Tokyo headquarters is located. The "Edo-Tokyo Museum Renewal Opening Special Edition" celebrates the Edo-Tokyo Museum's "resurrection" on March 31st, following approximately four years of large-scale renovations. The unique building, designed by architect Kiyonori Kikutake, is now a spot filled with new attractions. With actor Shunsuke Kazama, a Sumida Ward native, appointed as an応援サポーター (support supporter), "Edohaku Renewal" allows visitors to time-slip to the Edo period from the streets of Sumida! The special edition introduces events limited to the opening day and new highlights of the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and also includes a special feature of "Ryogoku Machi Aruki Kawaraban" (final issue), produced by the Sumida Ward Tourism Division.
In anticipation of the Edo-Tokyo Museum's renewal opening after a four-year hiatus, the town of Sumida will host a "Welcome Back! Edohaku" event on March 31st, with a packed schedule of commemorative events around the west exit of JR Ryogoku Station. At Edo NOREN, directly connected to the station, visitors can enjoy traditional Edo games like 'menko' and demonstrations by traditional craft preservation societies. At Ryogoku Station Hirokoji, in addition to sumo chants, performers dressed as Edo-era yokai will gather, recreating the Edo period's yokai boom. A "song and dance performance" inspired by the Bon Odori dances that were popular during that era will be presented, along with processions. The special edition includes the event schedule and highlights of the Edo-Tokyo Museum with photos.
