Sakai Moving Service Co., Ltd. (Sakai City, Osaka: President & CEO Tetsuyasu Tajima; hereafter 'Sakai Moving Service') has partnered with paramita Co., Ltd. (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo: Co-CEOs Atsushi Hayashi & Tetsuya Osawa; hereafter 'paramita') to launch the provision of 'Ethical Moving for Business', a new service supporting corporate ESG and decarbonization management.
This service is a mechanism that allows companies to offset (cancel out) the CO2 emissions (Scope 3 emissions) associated with employee relocations and moving in/out of company housing using carbon credits. Companies can easily and reliably contribute to forest conservation and solving regional issues within their normal business workflows.
## Background and Aim: Supporting Corporate 'Decarbonization Management' through Moving
Currently, many companies are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not only within their own operations but across their entire supply chain (Scope 3) to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. However, emissions associated with logistics and travel, particularly 'employee relocations', which occur frequently throughout the year, have been an area where countermeasures have lagged.
Therefore, we have co-developed 'Ethical Moving for Business', which specializes the framework of 'Ethical Moving'—a service released in advance for individuals in January 2025 that garnered significant response, receiving over 40,000 applications annually in its first year—into a corporate contract, allowing companies to adopt it as part of their environmental strategy.
## Overview of 'Ethical Moving for Business'
This is a program where corporate clients with a corporate contract can effectively reduce the CO2 emitted from a move to zero by adding 1,100 yen (tax included) to the moving cost.
1. Offsetting Scope 3 Emissions
The average emission of 0.056t CO2 (*) per move is offset using government-certified forest-derived 'J-Credits'. In addition to reducing the effort for companies to calculate and offset Scope 3 emissions, it can also be utilized to strengthen employee engagement by instilling the company's environmental stance among employees.
* The average CO2 emission per move is calculated based on Sakai Moving Service's Scope 1 emissions calculated using the fuel method and the annual number of moves handled.
2. Contributing to Natural Capital Across Japan, including Owase City, Mie and Tatsugo Town, Kagoshima
The target areas for purchasing carbon credits through 'Ethical Moving for Business' include Owase City in Mie Prefecture and Tatsugo Town in Kagoshima Prefecture, where Sakai Moving Service has signed agreements, and will gradually expand to forest conservation and ecosystem restoration projects across Japan. Simultaneously with carbon offsetting, it directly supports local biodiversity protection and regional revitalization.
3. Issuance of Certification Data Usable for ESG Reports
We provide an offset certificate (notification of invalidation) as proof of the offset. This can be included in external sustainability reports and integrated reports.
## Specific Use Cases
It accommodates a wide range of needs, from routine personnel transfers to large-scale base reorganizations.
- Regular/ad-hoc employee relocations
- Moving in/out of company housing, moving for new hires
- Domestic moving before/after overseas assignments
- Office relocations and base integration
Through this initiative, Sakai Moving Service and paramita aim to support corporate decarbonization management.
