The Health and Global Policy Institute conducted a national survey on cancer in February 2026, targeting 10,000 men and women aged 20 and over across Japan.
Since its establishment in 2005, immediately after its founding, the Institute has continuously conducted surveys and policy advocacy activities regarding the ideal state of cancer care and healthcare policy that patients and citizens expect.
Twenty years have passed since the enactment of the Cancer Control Act in 2006, and societal conditions and the environment surrounding healthcare have changed significantly. In this context, for cancer care to develop in a better way, discussions from a holistic societal perspective, including the sustainability of healthcare delivery systems and social security systems, are indispensable, in addition to the perspectives of patients and stakeholders.
Against this background, a survey was conducted targeting citizens, including cancer patients and stakeholders, with the aim of comprehensively examining the future of the healthcare system surrounding cancer. ■ About the Health and Global Policy Institute: https://hgpi.org/
The Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) is a non-profit, independent, and non-partisan private healthcare policy think tank established in 2004. To realize citizen-led healthcare policies, as an independent think tank, it has brought together a wide range of stakeholders and provided policy options to society. Without being bound by the positions of specific political parties or organizations, it maintains independence and offers new ideas and values from a broad, forward-looking perspective to realize a fair and healthy society. Since its establishment, it has promptly presented themes that were not sufficiently discussed at the time, such as women's health, cancer control, dementia, antimicrobial resistance, regenerative medicine, and global health, as policy issues, contributing to the formation of legal systems and national strategies, and their reflection in international policy discussions, thereby advancing concrete policies. These continuous efforts have received a certain level of evaluation from policymakers and international organizations both domestically and internationally, and as a Japan-originated healthcare policy think tank, it continues to participate in international dialogue forums.
We will continue our activities with everyone to present effective healthcare policy options not only in Japan but also to the world, and to solve global health and medical challenges.
