The Basic Act on Dementia, enacted in 2024, aims to realize an inclusive society where people with dementia can continue to live with hope, based on a "new perspective on dementia." However, achieving this requires not only support for people with dementia but also the construction of a comprehensive support system for the families and others who provide care. In Japan, the burden of care on families remains heavy, and balancing caregiving with work and social life, as well as the serious impact on physical and mental health, remain significant challenges.
Against this backdrop, the Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) Dementia Project has been working since April 2025 on the theme of "The Future of Dementia Policy Surrounding Families and Others Caring for People with Dementia." Through multi-stakeholder advisory board meetings and hearings, we have reorganized these issues and proceeded with the formulation of policy recommendations. This symposium was held as a summary of the project, which spanned approximately one year.

[About the HGPI Dementia Project] With the extension of life expectancy, addressing "dementia" has become a major policy issue not only in Japan but also internationally.
At HGPI, we view dementia as a global medical policy issue and have been working toward the advancement of global policies.
With the mission of "promoting multi-stakeholder collaboration for the advancement of dementia policy," and under the three pillars of "building a global platform," "emphasizing the perspective of people with lived experience," and "organizing and disseminating policy issues," we conduct research, studies, and policy advocacy activities while deepening relationships with diverse stakeholders.
