The Dementia Basic Act, enacted in 2024, aims to realize an inclusive society where people with dementia can continue to live with hope based on a "new view of dementia." However, realizing this requires not only support for people with dementia but also the establishment of a comprehensive support system for families and others who undertake caregiving. In Japan, the burden of care on families remains heavy, and the profound impact on their mental and physical health, as well as the balance with work and social life, are significant issues.
Against this background, since April 2025, the Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) Dementia Project has been organizing these challenges and formulating policy recommendations under the theme "The Future of Dementia Measures Surrounding Families Caring for People with Dementia" through multi-stakeholder advisory board meetings and hearings. We held this symposium as a summary of the project, which spanned about one year.

About the HGPI Dementia Project
With the extension of life expectancy, dealing with "dementia" has become one of the major policy issues not only in Japan but internationally.
HGPI considers dementia a global-level health policy issue and has been making efforts to promote policies worldwide.
With the mission of the project to "promote multi-stakeholder collaboration for the advancement of dementia policy," we conduct research, studies, and policy advocacy activities while deepening relationships with diverse stakeholders under three pillars: "building a global platform," "emphasizing the perspective of affected individuals," and "organizing and disseminating policy issues."
