■Grand Prix Winning Work

The Grand Prix was awarded to "Zonder titel (Untitled)" by Netherlands-based artist Ka Hang Mui. A trophy shaped like the "HERALBONY Art Prize" logo was presented on stage. The family of Grand Prix winner Ka Hang Mui commented, "On behalf of my brother, I would like to express my gratitude. I thank HERALBONY for organizing this, the staff at the studio who support my brother's creations daily, and especially Annette Fischer, a studio staff member who came all the way to Japan with us.

Tonight, I heard many wonderful words. I am very happy to recognize that the art of artists with disabilities is being acknowledged worldwide. I also felt very proud of my brother.

But honestly, the prize doesn't matter. The most important thing for me is that he can paint as he likes and do what he loves."

■General Comments from Juror Hiromi Kurosawa

This is the third year of the HERALBONY Art Prize, and we have seen increasingly powerful, unique, and diverse challenges. This year, we encountered about 3,000 new works. Each piece is filled with the artist's life and time. That is why the judges took great care in their evaluation, so as not to overlook anything.

HERALBONY has a brand statement: "Beyond Labels." Beyond means to go past, and a label is a label. While labels can help to make things and beings easier to understand, they can also confine someone within them. The phrase "Beyond Labels" contains our determination to go beyond that.

If there is one message you could take home from here today, it is that there is no single label of "art by people with disabilities." Instead, each creator has their own unique name first. I would like you to focus on the existence and life of each individual.

I want to question what we might be overlooking by fitting things into the box of "art by people with disabilities." It is not "people with disabilities" who are creating these works, but individual creators with names who are living in the same era and presenting their work. I myself felt this strongly again here today.

We will continue to move forward so that HERALBONY's message of "Beyond Labels" is not something special, but something that takes root as a matter of course.
