Izumi Ashikawa, the miracle pure-hearted actress who debuted in 1953 and continues to captivate fans even after leaving the industry in 1968, remains an iconic figure.
The results of the 'Izumi Ashikawa General Election 2026'—a voting project to decide the lineup for the special screening 'The Actress in Love: Izumi Ashikawa 2026' at Jinbocho Theater from May 9 to June 5, 2026—have been finalized among over 100 films.
Taking 1st place is the comedy 'Ashita Hareru ka' (Will Tomorrow Be Sunny?), featuring Izumi Ashikawa and Yujiro Ishihara as a photographer. Tied for 2nd place are 'Aitsu to Watashi' (He and I), starring the wealthy university student duo of Yujiro Ishihara and Ashikawa, and the youth literary work 'Ajisai no Uta' (Song of the Hydrangeas). Other popular titles like 'Muteki ga Ore wo Yondeiru' (The Foghorn is Calling Me), 'Nihon Retto' (The Japanese Archipelago), and 'Glass no Johnny' (Glass Johnny) also ranked high.
These titles will be screened starting May 9 at Jinbocho Theater. Fans can enjoy the legendary pure-hearted star's popular works on the big screen.
Furthermore, as part of the 'Nikkatsu Muse Revived: Miracle Pure-Hearted Actress Izumi Ashikawa' series, high-definition Blu-rays for 'Mashiroki Fuji no Ne' and 'Seishun Kaidan' will be released on May 13. Nikkatsu's official YouTube channel 'Nikkatsu Film Archive' will also offer free limited-time streaming of titles that were narrowly excluded from the screening lineup.
About the Miracle Actress Izumi Ashikawa Born in 1935, she debuted with Shochiku in 1953 before moving to Nikkatsu in 1955 at the recommendation of Director Yuzo Kawashima. She appeared in 102 Nikkatsu films, including the masterpiece 'Bakumatsu Taiyoden' (1957). She retired completely in 1968 after marrying actor Tatsuya Fuji, and her mysterious aura continues to attract fans today.
