The "Eva Japonisme" art project is produced by the "Evangelion" series—which has created a social phenomenon since its TV series broadcast began in 1995 and remains a work that transcends eras and borders—and the ukiyo-e publisher Han-Za Co., Ltd., which inherits the ukiyo-e culture that has continued since the Edo period into the present day.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the second "Eva Kabuki" series.

The origin of this work was the "Kabuki Symphony No. Kyu: Evangelion" held at the STAGE AREA during "EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION," the first-ever 30th-anniversary festival event for the Evangelion series, on Monday, February 23 (National Holiday).

The commercialization of this "Eva Kabuki" series was realized through the symbolic key visual created by Han-Za artist Yoshiyuki Ebata and the teaser visual by artist Izumo.

The world of "Eva," where the kabuki performed at the festival event has been sublimated into the stylistic beauty of ukiyo-e. The supreme collection of 7 works (including sets) will go on sale at noon on Monday, March 30, at the Han-Za online shop, "Ukiyo-e Kobo."

■ The Encounter of Fate — A Mythical Meeting at the End of the Red Sea, Where the Moon and Sun Confront Each Other
This piece was drawn as the key visual for Eva Kabuki.
Kaworu Nagisa, like a celestial being carrying a flute, and Shinji Ikari, dressed as a young warrior. We depicted their encounter as a solemn and mysterious space.

・ A Scene Suggesting "End" and "Beginning"
The setting sun sinking into the sea and the moon rising into the sky. In the background of this composition, which suggests contrasting concepts, we placed a cityscape reminiscent of a collapsed world, and the red-dyed sea emphasizes the apocalyptic nature and grandeur of the work.

・ A Hybrid Aesthetic Dwelling in Traditional Drawing Techniques
We adopted the symbolic confrontation composition seen in Shigeyan Nishimura's celestial maiden paintings and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka's warrior paintings.
For the expression of waves, we incorporated the techniques of Hokusai and Hiroshige, and overlaid our imagination onto ancient Japanese "sacred treasures" with designs such as a spear reminiscent of a serpentine sword (dakoken).

■ The Pinnacle of Actor Prints — Large-Head Portraits Capturing "Tension and Tranquility"
The large-head portrait (okubi-e) series featuring "Kaworu Nagisa" and "Shinji Ikari."
By using the close-up composition unique to large-head portraits, we emphasized the subtleties of psychology. These works express the beauty of mannerisms familiar to kabuki and Japanese culture.

・ Eva Kabuki Large-Head Portrait "Kaworu Nagisa"
For the kumadori (kabuki makeup), we adopted the "mukimi-guma," which symbolizes youthfulness and sensuality.
An expression harboring sorrow, as if staring into a mirror or into an abyss. We have sealed his reason for existence within the silence of his preparation.

・ Eva Kabuki Large-Head Portrait "Shinji Ikari"
Shinji Ikari, with his eboshi (cap) adjusted. We depicted the conflicting qualities of his emotions as a 14-year-old boy and his determination to fight as "wavering." His gaze, which is straightforward yet somehow reveals hesitation, strongly shakes the hearts of the viewers.

■ Units Sublimated into Kabuki Designs — The Stylistic Beauty of the New Century Carved into "Senjafuda"
Designs featuring Unit-01, Unit-00, and Unit-02, tailored with creative designs. We dropped their respective symbolic colorings into kabuki "kumadori" and reconstructed them into the stylistic beauty of senjafuda (votive slips), which have been popular since the Edo period.
On top of traditional pure handmade Japanese paper, the powerful title characters and mask-like forms emerge vividly.

Even after 30 long years, "Evangelion" continues to fascinate people.
The story gains the eternal beauty of ukiyo-e and breathes new life. It is a crystal of "Eva Japonisme" born from the resonance of each sensibility. Please pay attention to the many works that color the 30th anniversary of "Evangelion."
