Born in the Netherlands in 1910. A versatile artist who moved from Italy to the United States and gained international fame in the fields of graphic design and modern art. Among his many picture books, "Swimmy," "Frederick," and "Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse" are particularly highly acclaimed, all having received Caldecott Medals. They are widely cherished in Japan as masterpieces familiar from textbooks. His artistry continued to be highly praised worldwide, including in the United States and Germany, until his death in Tuscany, Italy, in 1999.
