Sakano describes this deluxe edition as the definitive version, collecting all seven books in the series along with Ehon Hyakumonogatari, the roots of the stories, in a specially made box. Drawing on his experience creating the redesigned paperback editions, he carefully considered what a deluxe edition of Kosetsu Hyakumonogatari should be. His answer was to express the grand and intricate world of the works directly through the physical form of the box and books. The narrative structure, in which events unfold across the long transition from Edo to Meiji while interlocking as precisely as clockwork gears, is translated into a tangible design. The aim is for the binding itself to function as part of the work. Black paper represents darkness, while silver ink represents light. Yokai appear and disappear through overlapping layers. Text is placed over a lattice pattern across the entire cover, turning the book itself into a miniature model of the story’s structure. The box set includes seven hardcover paperback-format deluxe editions of the Kosetsu Hyakumonogatari series, a hardcover paperback-format deluxe edition of Ehon Hyakumonogatari signed by Natsuhiko Kyogoku, a collection box, Mataichi’s talisman, and an invitation code for a purchasers-only online talk event with Kyogoku. The deluxe books feature square-spine hardcover bindings and an original design available only in this set. The total page count exceeds an astonishing 5,000 pages, and the visual impact of the books stored in the collection box is described as overwhelming. Ehon Hyakumonogatari will include Kyogoku’s handwritten signature. Mataichi’s talisman recreates the item that appears in the story. The purchasers-only online talk event with Natsuhiko Kyogoku is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2026, at 15:00. An archived stream will also be available for a limited time. Details will be provided in the invitation enclosed with the product. Natsuhiko Kyogoku was born in Hokkaido in 1963. He is a novelist, designer, director of the Printing Museum, and auditor of the Mystery Writers of Japan. He debuted in 1994 with The Summer of the Ubume and has received numerous awards, including honors for Moryo no Hako, Warau Iemon, Nozoki Koheiji, Nochi no Kosetsu Hyakumonogatari, Nishi no Kosetsu Hyakumonogatari, and Toi Kosetsu Hyakumonogatari.
