Green Co-op to Convert 74% of Fleet to EVs by December 2026, Reducing 3,446 Tons of CO2 Annually

Green Co-op, a general incorporated association composed of 16 consumer cooperatives centered in western Japan (Headquarters: Hakata-ku, Fukuoka; Representative Director: Yoko Hidaka), has been progressing with the transition of its entire fleet of 1,300 vehicles to EVs (Electric Vehicles) since September 2022. The initiative aims to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions from its business operations by 2027.

As of January 2026, 656 vehicles have already been switched to EVs. The organization plans to switch an additional 303 vehicles (breakdown: 215 trucks, 82 light vehicles, and 6 others) by around December 2026. This will bring the total number of EV conversions to 959, accounting for 74% of the fleet.

CO2 Reduction Effect through EV Transition While CO2 emissions derived from vehicle fuel were 4,778 tons in FY2021, the transition of 959 vehicles to EVs by December 2026 is expected to reduce annual CO2 emissions to 1,332 tons starting from January 2027. This represents a projected annual CO2 reduction of 3,446 tons compared to levels before the initiative began.

In addition to fleet electrification, Green Co-op is working toward carbon neutrality through various practices, including power generation using renewable energy independent of fossil fuels, reduction of dry ice usage, and tree planting. Charging with Electricity from Biomass, Small Hydro, Solar, and Geothermal Sources Independent of Fossil Fuels "Green Co-op Denki" is used to charge the EVs. This electricity is nuclear-free and generated through methods that do not rely on fossil fuels, utilizing biomass, small hydro, solar, and geothermal power. Furthermore, by utilizing the "CO2 Zero Emission Plan" with non-fossil certificates, the organization has achieved "zero CO2 emissions" under the Act on Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures. Green Co-op is promoting carbon neutrality including the electricity used to power its EVs. *While Green Co-op Denki does not emit CO2 during generation, under the law, it is treated as electricity emitting the national average amount of CO2, including fossil fuel power.
