Green Carbon Inc., a company engaged in nature-based carbon credit creation and sales, announced that it has conducted a demonstration experiment on AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) in rice paddies in collaboration with Toyota City, local producer Happy Nosan, the University of Shiga Prefecture, and Kyoto University. In this experiment, multiple water management conditions were compared to evaluate their impact on methane emissions and crop yields. The results confirmed that implementing AWD after mid-season drainage provides a higher methane reduction effect compared to conventional mid-season drainage alone. Furthermore, based on this experiment, it was shown that approximately 1.2 times the methane reduction effect can be expected compared to the maximum reduction coefficient (4.3tCO2/ha) for the Tokai region under the J-Credit mid-season drainage methodology. This provides valuable insights for future additional demonstrations and methodology development.
