■ Why the "Parent-Child Asset Formation Academy" Was Born

Background of the challenges facing children living in today's communities and Japan.

Children bear the future of our communities and Japan.
It is the children, who learn, play, and grow every day, that will support the future of our communities and Japan.
People are the foundation of resource-poor Japan. Without the growth of people, the sustainability and development of local regions and the country are impossible.

A Japan where, when asked about future dreams and finding one, they are questioned, "Can you make a living doing that?"
Since 2016, our organization Nancy (then a civic group) has been holding the career education event "Gifu Marble Town" in Gifu, where elementary school students can find and test what they "want to try!" by challenging themselves with jobs, elections, and entrepreneurship in a fictional town.

At its peak, an event gathered 791 elementary students and over 100 on-the-day volunteers from across the country for a 5-hour session. We built a track record, receiving awards such as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "Career Education Award" Encouragement Prize and the "Gifu Prefecture Regional Child Support Award," recognized as a "program where children can grow."

Then, when I was invited to give a lecture at a combined junior and senior high private school, a first-year junior high girl asked me this question:

"I want to live my life drawing pictures in the future, but my mother told me, 'You can't make a living drawing, so become a doctor!', so I am aiming to be a doctor. Is it possible to balance being a doctor and drawing pictures?"

I (Representative: Sumita) answered, "There are people in the world who work as doctors while winning many awards as novelists, so I think you can balance it." However, upon returning home and getting into bed, I reconsidered if that was really a good answer.

I regretted it, thinking, "Wasn't what she really wanted to know 'how can I make a living by drawing pictures'?"

Not just that girl, but almost all of us are asked by our parents and school teachers when we are children, "What is your future dream?" or "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

However, by the time we reach junior high or high school age, we are then asked, "Can you make a living doing that?" or "How long are you going to keep dreaming?"

That is exactly why, although we engaged in initiatives connected to children's dreams when we first started our activities, we realized that alone was not enough. Thinking that a place to learn about money, society, and the economy is necessary to lead a challenging life, we held repeated meetings with Mr. Nigu, a financial professional, and the Parent-Child Asset Formation Academy was born.
