Disaster Location Sharing App 'Cocodayo' Now Supports 'docomo Starlink Direct' Satellite-to-Smartphone Communication

(hereinafter "docomo").

This marks the second major domestic carrier supported by "Cocodayo" for direct satellite-to-smartphone communication, following KDDI Corporation's "au Starlink Direct."

Expanded User Convenience "docomo Starlink Direct" is a service utilizing SpaceX's "Starlink Mobile" to enable direct communication between satellites and smartphones, which docomo will start providing on Monday, April 27, 2026.

By supporting this service, "Cocodayo" enhances the reachability of its basic functions—such as disaster location sharing, safety confirmation with family, checking weather and disaster alerts, referencing shelter information, and tracking group members' locations—even outside docomo 5G/4G LTE areas within Japan (including territorial waters), provided there is a clear view of the sky and a compatible smartphone. (Currently, map display, PUSH notifications, chatbots, and billing functions are unavailable during satellite communication.) This expands the means for situational awareness and initial decision-making in environments where mobile signals are hard to reach, such as mountainous areas, remote islands, and the open sea.

Significance of the Initiative Following its support for "au Starlink Direct," "Cocodayo" now covers the satellite-to-smartphone direct communication services of Japan's two major carriers. This enables the provision of disaster prevention and safety confirmation methods in out-of-service areas to an even broader range of smartphone users.
