Asunaro Gakuin, a comprehensive academic prep school in Miyagi Prefecture operated by Gakken Study et Co., Ltd. (Saitama, Saitama City; President and CEO: Masahiro Kameya), a group company of Gakken Holdings Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiroaki Miyahara), will hold an "Math Basic Calculations & Japanese Kanji and Vocabulary Intensive Training" session for third-year junior high school students on July 23, 2026 (Thu).
Aiming to Improve Academic Performance by Strengthening Foundational Skills in Calculations and Kanji
In regular classes or workshops, it is often difficult to allocate dedicated time to mastering fundamental calculations and kanji. However, by solidifying basic math skills and memorizing key vocabulary through this event prior to the main workshop, students can more easily absorb the material during the workshop and significantly improve their overall performance.
Even students who struggle with math or frequently lose points due to kanji errors can build confidence by achieving full marks on each practice sheet. Successfully completing all tasks through consistent effort enables them to approach subsequent workshops with greater assurance.

Overview of the "Math Basic Calculations & Japanese Kanji and Vocabulary Intensive Training"
▷ Prior to the event, students will receive a math workbook and a booklet summarizing essential kanji and vocabulary for Japanese language studies.
Students are expected to prepare in advance, aiming to solve all math problems correctly and to be able to write all the kanji and vocabulary terms. For any math problems they find difficult, students are encouraged to consult their instructors at the learning center.
▷ A test will be administered on the first day of the workshop.
This test verifies whether students have truly mastered the material. Students who pass all sections may return home early, though many choose to stay and continue studying in the self-study room until the end.
▷ Students will enter the main workshop with a solid foundation.
By mastering basic calculations in advance, students can dedicate more time during the workshop to advanced topics such as word problems, functions, and geometry.

Background Behind the Event
In Miyagi Prefecture's public high school entrance exams, math typically has an average score in the high 40s, making it generally the lowest-scoring subject among the five core subjects. However, the first question section ("Question 1") is worth 26 points, and combined with the second question section ("Question 2"), the total reaches 58 points—exceeding the average score. Therefore, achieving full marks on Question 1 and securing key points from Questions 2 to 4 has become an absolute necessity, regardless of overall academic level.
Similarly, in Japanese language exams, there are six kanji-related questions (worth 12 points total)—three on reading and three on writing. Additionally, in other subjects such as science and social studies, losing points due to incorrect kanji in terminology must be avoided.
To address this, the event was created to provide dedicated time for intensive practice on "basic-level math problems equivalent to Questions 1 and 2" and on "frequently tested kanji in Japanese and commonly mistaken terms in science and social studies."
