■Background
In many island resort accommodations in the Republic of Fiji, seawater desalination plants are operated to secure domestic water. Most of the seawater desalination plants in the country rely on power supplied by generators that consume large amounts of fossil fuels, resulting in massive greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously pressuring management costs due to high fuel expenses.

In this project, wastewater within island resort accommodations in the Republic of Fiji will be treated as reclaimed water. By utilizing this reclaimed water as an alternative to the freshwater produced by seawater desalination plants, the project will verify the feasibility of reducing fossil fuel-derived greenhouse gas emissions and lowering operational costs.

■Specific Demonstration Details
This project will be conducted using a sand filtration water treatment device (a technology that removes turbidity and impurities contained in water by laying sand and gravel in layers in the filtration equipment and using them as a filter), a technology that is already well-established in Japan.

Furthermore, the sand filtration water treatment device introduced in this project has a more compact shape than conventional models, making it easy to transport, and incorporates advanced technology that eliminates the need to replace the filter media. The introduction of this advanced technology enables stable operation even in areas where specialized maintenance and installation are difficult, and is expected to reduce logistics and maintenance costs. In addition, as an independent decentralized water treatment solution, this device enables introduction in locations without public infrastructure and utilization for securing emergency water during disasters.

(Verification Items)
(1) Confirmation of water quality improvement effect through the water treatment device
By retreating the treated water from the sewage and drainage treatment plant inside the island resort accommodation using the sand filtration water treatment device, it will be confirmed that the water quality improves to a level that can be reused for toilet flushing water, etc., within the facility.

(2) Verification of the effect of introducing reclaimed water (treated water passed through the sand filtration water treatment device)
The treated water (reclaimed water) whose quality improvement was confirmed in step (1) will be experimentally used as toilet flushing water for facility staff. Odor and chromaticity during daily use and periods of long-term non-use will be strictly verified to confirm whether the water quality is at a level that can also be used in guest rooms.

Additionally, to measure the impact that the introduction of reclaimed water brings to the environment and facility management, a quantitative evaluation will be conducted on the following items:
- Freshwater production reduction effect: The amount of freshwater production suppressed when toilet flushing water is replaced with reclaimed water
- Fuel consumption reduction effect: The reduction in fuel used due to the suppression of seawater desalination plant operations
- Environmental and economic effects: Suppression of greenhouse gas emissions accompanying the reduction of fuel used, and reduction of operational costs

(3) Formulation of water quality standards for reclaimed water utilization
This project will officially integrate the "Draft Master Plan for Reclaimed Water Utilization," which is being prepared under the "Master Plan Formulation Project*," into the strategies of the Republic of Fiji.
