Shimoda Aquarium (Headquarters: 3-22-31, Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture; General Manager: Koichi Keino) has been hosting the 'All About Fixed-Net Fishing' exhibition since June 27, 2026 (Sat). As part of its summer special event series, the aquarium will launch the second phase of this exhibition on July 25 (Sat), titled 'Diver in Fisherman's Attire Feeds Fish – Join the Fishermen!' featuring the 'Discovery Ocean' fish feeding show.
◇ About the 'All About Fixed-Net Fishing' Exhibition
Launched on June 27, 2026, the summer special exhibition 'All About Fixed-Net Fishing' focuses on 'fixed-net fishing'—a vital yet underappreciated fishing method that supports Japan’s seafood supply. Fixed-net fishing is a sustainable method that leverages fish behavior and natural ocean currents to catch only migrating fish, avoiding overfishing. By reducing fuel consumption and preventing excessive catches, and recently integrating AI and IoT for smart fishing (data utilization), this method embodies the SDGs—particularly Goal 14: 'Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources.' The exhibition clearly explains the mechanisms of fixed-net fishing and real-life fishing operations to raise public awareness.
◇ About the 2nd Phase: 'Discovery Ocean' Fish Feeding Show in Fisherman's Attire
Divers dressed in fisherman-inspired costumes will appear in the 'Discovery Ocean' fish feeding show. From a fisherman’s perspective, they will introduce the best seasons for catching various fish, their flavors, and potentially dangerous species. Additionally, a separate commentator dressed as a fish market auctioneer will explain delicious ways to prepare each fish, while using real specimens—such as the venomous spine on a stingray’s tail and a moray eel’s skull—to highlight hazardous body parts.
