Fujikura Ltd. (President and CEO: Naoki Okada) has developed a new small-diameter, high-density optical fiber cable for air-blown installation, the "1728-core Air Blown WTC®," and has commenced its sales.
This product incorporates Fujikura's proprietary 12-core Spider Web Ribbon® (SWR®*1) technology, which allows for mass fusion splicing. It has been added to the lineup of small-diameter, high-density optical fiber cables, Wrapping Tube Cable® (WTC®*2), and is now available for sale.
Air Blown WTC®
**Background of the Development of 1728-core Air Blown WTC®**
Within data centers, the adoption of ultra-high-count WTC® is already progressing. In addition, the demand for optical fiber cables is expanding for lines that interconnect already established data centers (DCI).
Fujikura has developed and commercialized Air Blown WTC® which can rapidly construct high-speed, high-capacity networks. However, with the rapid increase in information volume in hyperscale data centers, the demand for increased information transmission capacity in DCI is also growing.
In response to these market needs, we have newly developed the 1728-core Air Blown WTC®.
**Features of 1728-core Air Blown WTC®**
Fujikura's 1728-core Air Blown WTC® is a small-diameter, high-density optical fiber cable compatible with the air-blown installation method, which can shorten construction time. In its development, we leveraged the design technology cultivated with the 864-core Air Blown WTC® and highly optimized the cable dimensions. As a result, while being smaller in diameter and lighter than outdoor SWR®/WTC® with the same fiber count, it secures the mechanical properties necessary for air-blown installation, such as crush resistance.
In air-blown tests using microducts, we confirmed that it can be installed over a distance of 1,000m.
By achieving 1728 cores, which is double the previous maximum of 864 cores, it is possible to halve the number of cables installed per identical installation distance, contributing to the construction of communication networks in terms of both economics and efficiency.

*1 Spider Web Ribbon® (SWR®)
An optical fiber ribbon developed with our proprietary technology. It has a structure where single optical fibers are intermittently bonded, characterized by high flexibility. It enables high-density mounting within optical fiber cables, contributing to the smaller diameter and higher density of optical fiber cables.
*2 Wrapping Tube Cable® (WTC®)
The name of a small-diameter, high-density optical fiber cable developed with our proprietary technology, implementing SWR®. It is an optical fiber cable with a simple structure where optical fiber ribbons are covered with a winding tape. Because its structure is smaller in diameter and higher in density than conventional optical fiber cables, such as the slot structure mainly used in Japan and the loose tube structure common overseas, it can use existing conduits, significantly shortening construction periods.
