About KAMARI Hostel & Tours

■ Background and Vision of Development

The Mutsuminato area in Hachinohe City, where the facility will be built, is one of the premier port towns in the Tohoku region. For generations, the energetic voices of 'Isaba no Kaccha' selling fresh fish at the market from boats docked at dawn have echoed through the town. 'Isaba no Kaccha' refers to the powerful mothers working in Mutsuminato. The term combines 'Isaba', a historical name for people who peddled marine products during the Edo to Meiji periods, and 'Kaccha', a dialect word in the Nanbu region meaning 'mother'. They remain a lively symbol illuminating the Mutsuminato area.

We decided to build a hostel in this location to deliver the inherited warmth of this town and the somewhat nostalgic 'Kamari' (Nanbu dialect for 'aroma') to travelers worldwide. The name 'KAMARI' embodies our hope that guests will bathe in the fragrant terroir (climate and culture) with all five senses and awaken an innocent curiosity for new journeys.

Our goal is not just to provide a place to sleep. It is a catalyst for guests to engage more deeply with the town and grow to love it more—a hub that inspires excitement for their next journey. We are currently preparing to provide that sense of elation from the moment they open the door.

[Design Concept]

The logo and architectural design are structured around motifs of Mutsuminato's 'waves' and the 'tents' of the morning market where people gather. They express the personality the port town has cultivated over time, aiming for a space that is sophisticated yet somewhat nostalgic and comforting.

Although it is a warm 2-story wooden structure, the facility features a modern roof shape with beautifully harmonized sharp angles and straight lines, inspired by the 'waves' and morning market 'tents'. The exterior walls incorporate details expressing the history and flavor (personality) of the port town, aiming for an appearance that warmly welcomes travelers while remaining sophisticated.

The ground floor facing the street has large glass windows, designed to be open to the community, allowing the building's liveliness and warm light to spill into the street. The approach to the entrance features a slope friendly to travelers with large suitcases.

The centerpiece of the front garden is a 'pine tree', symbolizing the harsh nature and vitality of Hachinohe. Pine trees growing on the rocky shores of the Tanesashi Coast are said to last only a few years due to fierce sea breezes and harsh winters. Yet, no matter how severe the environment, new pines strongly sprout on the rocks every year. This 'overwhelming vitality that never dies' is expressed in the front garden of KAMARI. The pine tree embodies the strength of the town, rooted in Mutsuminato's climate and constantly reborn, along with the warmth of welcoming travelers.

Stepping inside, a warm, wood-grain front space welcomes guests. Beyond it lies a lounge space characterized by a dynamic, high ceiling (atrium) boldly extending to the second floor.

Abundant natural light from Mutsuminato pours through large windows facing the street, enveloping the entire space brightly and openly. In the attached shared kitchen, counter seats, and table seats, travelers from around the world naturally gather, creating lively scenes of exchange filled with smiles. It transforms throughout the day: a fresh time around ingredients bought at the market in the morning, a workspace for focused work or study in the afternoon, and a warm community space to share travel memories at night. It is a warm space where new connections and stories are woven.

To accommodate diverse accommodation needs, we offer three private rooms where guests can relax. Groups, families, and couples can feel at home during their stay. Gentle natural light filtering through the windows creates a private space that pleasantly heals the fatigue of travel.
