FANCL Corporation held a makeup seminar for visually impaired individuals on Friday, May 29, 2026, in Kobe City, jointly with the Hyogo Prefecture Retinitis Pigmentosa Society (JRPS Hyogo). Seven participants attended, marking the first time FANCL has co-hosted such an event with the association.

The seminar focused on helping each participant visualize their ideal self and learn how to complete their own makeup independently.

【Starting with Participants’ Vision of Their Ideal Selves】

The seminar began by sharing participants’ desires, such as “wanting to enjoy fashion even with vision loss” and “learning the basics of makeup.” Each participant visualized their own unique beauty, and the session proceeded in a hands-on format.

First, skincare was introduced. Participants experienced how their skin condition improves by gently applying toner and moisturizer with their palms. This provided an opportunity to understand the importance of gentle, careful skincare.

【Introducing the Touch-Identifiable 'Touch Mark Label'】

To address the challenge of similar-looking cosmetic containers that are difficult to distinguish, FANCL introduced its 'Touch Mark Label.'

Developed in collaboration with visually impaired employees, the Touch Mark Label features raised tactile patterns—without braille—that allow anyone to easily differentiate products by touch. Participants used actual products with the labels attached during the seminar.

【Using Hand and Finger Sensation to Complete Makeup Independently】

Next, participants practiced makeup techniques using their hands and fingers. For base makeup, they used a BB cream that combines coverage and natural radiance in one product, applying it themselves while confirming application tips. For accent makeup, participants selected colors matching their desired look and learned how to apply them using fingers instead of brushes or applicators. With support from staff and guide helpers, each participant completed their own makeup.

【Participants Express Joy at Doing It Themselves】

Participants shared positive feedback: “The result was naturally beautiful, just as I imagined,” “I always thought eye makeup was difficult, but I did it myself and I’m so happy,” and “This was the first time I’ve ever tried accent makeup.”

Regarding FANCL’s lip color 'Aqua Serum Rouge' used in the seminar, one participant commented, “The container makes a sound when turned, so it’s easy to know how much is left—very user-friendly even without sight.”

At the end of the seminar, participants and support members exchanged compliments like “You look beautiful,” filling the venue with smiles.

【Aiming for a Society Where Everyone Can Shine Vibrantly】

FANCL will continue to support individuals with disabilities and strive toward realizing a society where everyone can live vibrantly.

■ About the Visually Impaired Makeup Seminar

Since 1988, FANCL has conducted seminar activities aimed at “revitalizing local communities” and “contributing to a society where everyone can live vibrantly,” as part of its commitment to a sustainable society. As one such initiative, since 2013, FANCL has implemented the 'FANCL Visually Impaired Makeup Seminar' nationwide, offering self-reliance support tailored to visually impaired individuals.

Many visually impaired individuals experience gradual vision loss, known as 'acquired visual impairment.' Even those who previously paid attention to their appearance may give up on fashion and makeup after losing their sight, often leading to social withdrawal.

This seminar aims not to provide a makeup service, but to empower participants to apply makeup independently after the session. The curriculum includes practical training to help participants acquire makeup skills.

■ Development and Distribution of the Touch Mark Label

The Touch Mark Label is an original tactile sticker developed to help users who find it difficult to distinguish between similar containers. Featuring raised patterns for tactile identification and large-print text for visibility, users can attach the labels to easily identifiable spots on containers. The labels are provided free of charge to customers upon product purchase. Visually impaired employees were directly involved in the development of this label.

■ Awards

FANCL’s 'Visually Impaired Makeup Seminar' and 'Touch Mark Label' received the 'Cabinet Office Special Envoy Minister Encouragement Award' at the '2019 Barrier-Free and Universal Design Promotion Merit Awards Ceremony (18th edition, December 2019)' hosted by the Cabinet Office.
